More power

Morning all. I am starting to build my next boat, a Model Slipway Recue boat (looks like a RNLI Trent class but not to scale), the kit comes with a Graupner Speed 400 6v motor and a rarther large toy looking prop & shaft assy. I am wanting to make to look more like the real thing and was going to build it with 2x speed 400 6v motors driving 2x 25mm brass 4 blade handed props . I have been told that this is too much power for this size of boat, and it will most likely fly,flip or sink poss all three. What are your thoughts ? also Graupner list it as a 6V but will take up to 7.2v looking at the 280 6v motors they only list a max of 6v will these run on 7.2v without any damage or should I go for 2x 300 7.2v?

Graupner speed 280`s will quite happily run on 7.2v, or at least they do on my converted Severn, and a pair of non-flying boats, and a plastic battleship and and…

 

They seem to work well enough on 25mm brass props that I have fitted to them. The Severn is particularly…brisk. One I have seen with two 400s was even brisker, if a bit lower in the water, but the attitude at speed was well improved by some transom flaps. You may not want these as it will make the boat a bit less original, but thats not much of a price to pay so you can enjoy THRASHING all the other tubs around the pond. Sorry about that it just slipped out.

 

You would want to be embarrassed by not enough power, eh?

 

They have the advantage of being much smaller than the 400`s needless to say which may be a plus point if the boat is non too big (should have googled to see what size we are talking about here first), and should think they would provide about as much power as a 400, practically speaking, in a non-planing hull..

Over-power it.  You don’t have to use 100% of the available power.  If you under-power it, it’s much harder to fix.  Mark.
