Love your idea John about a coat of satin varnish to protect the paintwork, really brings out the colours as well!!

        Hi Ched,

She has progressed well 🙂 the only trouble is the satin coat of paint has made the grey far too dark now for a MTB the grey primer colour is best as applied and doesn’t need sealing really 🙁

        Regards Ray

Kitting out the deck now. So far made everything myself that these 86yo arthritic hands will allow!!

Do you think I should paint the deck a different colour from the RN grey? Would add a bit of contrast. Saw a dark green one somewhere.

hi there, you are making a grand job of the boat – in regards to the colour of the deck – some MTBs had a very dark sea grey colour and some had a blue colour during the War.  The problem now is obtaining a good true match to the blue colour for the deck; as the Company White Ensign who used to produce it – don’t seem to be doing so now.

                  John

I would always be guided by real photographs wherever possible.  Failing that any literature I could get my hands on such as books on the type or similar craft of a similar age would be next best.

                      hi there

Just been reading back through this thread – and – I think it is page 2 which has the colour reference for your model.

Also, page 2 has a link to the White Ensign Colour chart to give you a rough idea of what B15 looks like.

Here is a little model which I built from downloaded plans off the KK EezeBitt Boat Kits and the model is The Terrier which KeelKraft made back in the 50s/60s.  The deck I painted with the Blue B15.

                        Hi

Sorry to jump in here, it’s just that I still have my original Terrier that I got from Modelzone in Crawley some time back in the early 80’s, it’s just a shelf queen now.

                            hi there

The actual model colour I used was White Ensign tin of paint Colourcoats and its numbers are WEMCC RN 15 Royal Navy World War II B15.   Sadly though, I dont think they are in production now.   I am looking to see if I can find a colour match/similar colour in the Humbrol colour chart.   The closest I can get at the moment is 109 World War I Blue.  However, the Humbrol one does seem like it is a little darker if not a petrol blue to my eyes.   But, it is YOUR model and if you wish to paint the colour anything you wish you go ahead.      I watched a good thing last night on a model railway channel and his advice ENJOY YOUR HOBBY AND DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.

No doubt someone may come along and give you a direct substitute to the correct colour.

                            John

There are a number of model paint colour conversion table websites that might help e.g.

                              https://www.modelshade.com/

This site (in Poland) may also be useful:

                              https://www.armahobby.com/category/model-paints-royal-navy-colours

Acrylics on a working model are best protected by a coat of lacquer or transparent varnish.

Many thanks John/Colin. I’ll have a look through the charts. Just thought it might be nice to break up the grey!

I’m trying to remember the deck of the Braver Borderer fast (and I mean fast) patrol boat I was on briefly while serving!

Hi there, this could be a classic detective case in modelling.   There are very few coloured photographs of Brave Borderer, the Vosper Craft MTB, but, there are several excellent models of her around.   Not becoming confused with the Perkasa model, or real vessel.   Some of the models of The Borderer show a dark grey deck.   Also, they show a green deck.    Now, the class of vessel which preceded was the dark class such as Grey Archer P1041.  There are coloured photographs of the real vessel in existence and they show a green deck.   So, having said that; I would suspect some time in her life she may well have had a green deck when you were actually serving on her.

Might be worth checking out the restored MGB 81 berthed at Portsmouth. There is a superb video showing her at sea. Deck is clearly a dark grey and presumably non slip.

Lots of other references online to restoring the boat which might give some more information on the colour scheme used for the restoration.

Again thanks guys. The Borderer deck was definitely non slip and yes, maybe dark grey.

Nice movie and interesting paint job with light hull and dark decking. My hull is dark grey above the anti fouling red lead so to carry that over onto the deck might look all right.

Think I’ll give that a go, see what it looks like. Can always change it!
