Paul. I think the way forward with the superstructure would be to make a master. mould and then produce either a fibreglass top, OR get it vaccuumm moulded in 2mm styrene or something. Due to the shape of the superstructure, it is likley to be fairly rigid without a lot of bracing, and in fact I would have thought a fibreglass top should also be fairly light.?

Am I right in thinking that a firing /reloadable gun is an essential for your build?  ie you are not interested in simply building “a submarine” but one with that bit extra??

        Hi Yabbie

Buoyancy isnt a problem but moving the existing buoyancy around does help with the trim as the model is a little nose heavy, the problem would be extending the mechanics into the seperate forward section……more food for thought.

        Hello Ashley

GRP would solve some problems with the curves on the hull (I was looking forward to playing with aluminium but its a bug+er doing compound curves)
Yes the firing gun is essential, in its day the M1 was the ultimate weapon and it all centered upon its ability to surface and fire that big gun.

Seeing as how a sub is almost 90% submerged on the surface with just the deck almost awash,  it won’t require much water ballast to sink it.       If you use two small plastic water bottles in the hull, (one fore and one aft) connected to a pump.      As the pump starts filling the bottles, the air in the bottles will be compessed to the point where the pump can’t overcome the pressure in the bottles and the filling stops.      With the extra weight of water ballast the sub will be sitting on the bottom.     When the water ballast is pumped out with the assistance of the air compressed in the bottles, the sub will start to rise to the surface again.      The bottles will return to their original state of emptiness or near enough.       The power of the pump and the size of bottles can be increased if needed.        By increasing the bottle size, more water can be pumped on board before the pump can’t pump any more.                 Geoff.

            Hello Paul

I seem to remember that there was more to your thread?

I think I saw your CAD drawings showing the mighty gun?

            Bob

              Hello Captain Bob

Yes there were some drawings and sections but I took them off some time ago.

John has certainly posed a heavy duty question.

I don't regard it as a heavy duty question I just want the best and I am prepared to pay for the best.

                  John,

This is a 'general purpose' model boating forum and while our members have a lot of expertise and experience between them, as you will be aware from your contacts with Paul, model submarining is a specialised but mature technology and in respect of the building issues you might like to have a look at the Association of Model Submariner's Website: **LINK**

There is a very good chance that their members would be able to give you some good advice on transforming Paul's designs into a practical working model. There are also manufacturers who produce model submarine diving gear which means that the technology you need may be available 'off the shelf'.

                    Hello Colin

Thank you for the AMS link and I will certainly keep them in mind when it comes to the build stage.

I also appreciate your comments regarding the general purpose nature of this website but the practical nature and modelling skills of the members on this site is exactly the reason that I chose to launch my project here.

Before starting this project I carried out 12 months of research to find the best 'all in one' model boat designer & builder and certain members of this site came out on top.

I was also impressed by the helpful and open nature of all forum members and the lack of elitism & self indulgent waffle that occupies the pages of other forums.

As moderator of the website you should be proud and congratulated on the accumulation of such a wide ranging skills base.

I had cause to revisit my work on the M1 and came across some photos of other super-gunned submarines from the same period so I am posting them for others who are interested in these bygone stealth weapons.
