leaking hull

Hi,guys

 

sorry to be a pain,

 

just recived my first  ever fiberglass hull, i normally work in wood. is it common for them to leak when doing a bath test and any tips on curing the problem? or could it be considered reasnoble to ask the manufacture for a replacement?

Where does the water come in? – have you made any holes for the propshaft or rudder yet, and if so, is the leak there?

if it’s a virgin hull with no work done to it by yourself, and is straight from the supplier, then yes indeed you are entitled to have a replacement.

 

it is not common, but then again is not unheard of if the mould has been done for lightness .

just phone them up and explain, and i am more than certain they would offer you a replacement.

thanks for that advice, the kit cost enough money, I was a bit dissapointed to see water coming in. I will get in touch with the suppler.

Just a thought. with my Sailing fishing boat the hull is FG, and she leaked at first. The source was where the two hull halves were joined.,i.e. along the keel line. I found this out when I put the hull into water before pouring molten lead into it!  So after a really good dryout with a hairdryer, I mixed up a good amount of resin and poured that inside, allowing it to run everywhere, ( Afterwards put the hull into a water bath as the resin gets very hot as it cures) This solved the problem for me. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the advice, spoke to the manufacture and they where more than helpfull and a new replacement hull is on its way .

Hi Simon,

Seeing that this is new hull and there still has to be some fitting done inside the boat, such as glueing in the wooden side supports for the decks do not worry about the leaks at this stage. Fiber glass the wooden side strips in and if there are any bulkheads fiberglass these in as well then paint the entire hull inside with resin and this should take care of the leaks. Or If you want send the hull back and demand a replace ment hull.  If you do any fiberglassing remember that this is also a very good time to make an additional raised support where the rudder post is going to be comming through the hull.

What I do here is I take some srcap plastic card and make a neat little box and glue this down inside the hull where the rudder post is going to be. Then I cut the fiberglass mat into very small fine pieces and mix this into some resin  until it forms a thickish paste of fiberglass and resin. Then take a stick and pack this paste into the box until it is full. Don’t worry if it is a little higher than the box. Once it has set take a grinder and smooth it down.
