Hi everyone,I saw an article in the magazine a couple of months ago about the Krik Polizeboot and was very impressed. The post Christmas Clearout and the wife binned the magazine. From what I remember the author of the article made a few changes i.e. the motor??. I would like this to be my party piece if you like and want to put lights, sound ect on it. As I have never attempted this before ANY advice would be welcome as to where to situate it all and the type of r/c gear to use.As I need it to look great painting advice colour's and the order in which to do it as my last model looks crap as I cannot airbrush. I know it is a lot to ask but I work better off the forum than the magazine. Regards Dai H

It's all in the planning, especially for the lights. Before you start building work out what cabin lights you want. Is there a searchlight? Floodlights, mast lights etc. List it all out together with all the other extras and gadgets you want.

Next, read up on led lights, search this forum and others and get an understanding of how it all works.

Next plan wire routes and how to connect wires from the detachable bits to the hull, that's worth a search on here too.

Then think about power supply and good ways to wire it.

After all that, you'll have some specific questions which people on here can help you with.

Its also worth looking at switching units for the functions, there are several ways of doing it, but you could do worse than looking at the website of component shop, for some ideas.

I don't have any knowledge about the motor you mention, but I'm willing to bet that a change to a modern brush less motor will be a good idea. Also worth a search for info on here.

Many, probabably most of us use rattle cans for painting, often from Halfords. Easy and cheap.

I hope that's enough to get you started.

Hi Chas, many thanks for your reply pointing me in the right direction and I am going to do as you suggest. On the subject of planning will I have to take into account weight because as you an experienced modeller will know how to put bits on without making the model top heavy where as I do not,is there a rule or some way of gauging this. Regards Dai H

Common sense works for you with stability. Firstly the boat as designed is a very stable model and secondly the led lights and wireing will be unlikely to weigh over 25 grams.

Remembering some golden rules of model boat making will keep you ok , keep all heavy items like motor and batteries as low in the hull as possible, don't add anything heavy high up in the superstructure.

I can't comment further without knowing if you have any other extras in mind.

                  Hi David,

The article you mention was in the December 2017 issue of MB mag. by Andy Cope. I have checked what he says about the motor and he upgraded the supplied 400 brushed motor for a 500 'for more ooomph' He also says that a 600 would probably fit the supplied mount. As I write the odd (very odd some would say) article for Model Boats mag I have a fair library of their issues and you may be able to get another copy from the MB offices.

Also if you subscribe to this website via the Digital issue method you can scan back over many issues at will and her indoors can't throw them out.

The suggestion that you maybe change the recommended motor for a brushless one sits well with me as they are what I mainly use now and there will certainly be more than enough 'Ooomph' if you do this, plus of course better efficiency, much lighter in weight. It is quite a small and light model and I have found that a 28mm diameter by 20mm long outrunner motor of about 1000kv is easily going to push the model along. You could go bonkers and fit a 35mm diameter one but that is just overkill.

Recommend a Gold Turnigy 2820 x 1000kv or similar with a 30amp waterproof reversible escape/speed controller, both from Hobby King UK for about £30. A 7.4volt x 2400 Li-Po will be all the power you need but if you want more speed still, upgrade the Li-Po to 11.1volts. Thats a prop speed of 7,400 rpm or 11,1000 rpm with that motor.

Hope this helps, but if you really can't find the article, PM me and I will photocopy the article and post it to you. (It will be in Black and white though…Laser copier is only mono!)

                  Cheers……Ron Rees.

Hello to you all and many thanks for all the information (now stored in the hobby folder on the p.c.!!).It really is great to know that you are all willing to share your knowledge with me a relative beginner. Er in doors is getting me the model for our 31 years of purgatory in March so my plan is to wait and see what it all looks like then plan it out. Then if I have any problems I can hop back onto the forum. Again many thanks to you all .Regards Dai H

                      Hobby folder!!

You should have a dedicated model boat folder and another one in your web-browser for all the links to suppliers etc!
