I would be grateful if someone who has built the Italeri S-Boot for RC conversion would advise me on the safest way to drill through into the hull for inserting the propshafts and tubes, how to obtain the correct angle for these and where exactly they should enter the hull. I understand there has to be some alteration from those suppled for a static display model. Further, what is the best glue/solvent to use for the model. All information would be very welcome.
      Thanks
      Pat

          Pat,

If you look at my postings in the thread at http://www.modelboats.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=27016

you will see my bits about shaft length etc. Unless you have already bought a set of SHGs shafts which were intended for a motor/battery layout that kept the weight central, there is no particular reason not to stick to the same layout as the kit. i have seen at least two working versions that are fine with that way of doing it.

Thank you Francis. I do have the SHG running kit and carefully read the article about converting the boat by Dave Abbott in Model Boats. I’ve also read a posting from July 2009 from which it seems the member asked a similar question to mine. Unfortunately, I didn’t see that before making my own posting as that could have saved me work. What was not mentioned in Dave’s article is that according to this subscriber, he substantially reduced the boat’s tube fairings in order to alter the angle of entry into the hull, something which would have been of great assistance had details been included. Very disappointing. As it is I now have some repair work to do because I had drilled through the hull in the wrong place and must try to figure out how much Dave cut off the fairings and follow suit. I hope that future articles of this nature will either contain full details of how to perform such operations or at least carry a warning that radical alterations will be necessary. They appear to have been glossed over in this case although I imagine experienced constructors will have had no problems and perhaps the article was wriiten with those in mind.

I now see that in July 2009 you posted the information about Dave Abbott dispensing with most of the fairings from this Italeri kit. Can you recall exactly what he did? Did he cut off the flat pieces and/or cut the fairings in half, using the closed end pieces to accept the propshafts? I would appreciate any info you can supply.
              Thanks

                Hi Pat,

The only other info that I can offer is the 3 page word document with a fair number of pictures that SHG sent me when i first got their shorter shafts. There are no measurements nor any text on how to go about modifying the kit. I can’t attach the document to this message so will have to e-mail to you if you PM me your address.
