I have a 1980s Graupner Marina which I was getting ready to sail again for one of my grandsons. Is it possible to use for example a Voltz 4600mAh 6v Receiver Sub-C Pack With BEC/JR Plug as the battery source for the rx and the motor with a Bobs board on a servo in between the motor and the battery pack and another servo to control the rudder. The battery has a power connection and a BEC connection can I use both for the above purpose? It originally ran with a Bob's Board and two separate battery packs, one for rx and one for motor. Motor is a mabuchi 380.

Your description isn't 100% clear, but I get the idea that the battery has two sets of wires connected to it – one to feed the ESC and motor and the other intended to be connected to a separate BEC unit – probably via a little red 2-pole JST plug or socket. This unit will reduce the voltage from 6 to 5 for the receiver. There are any number of these available from Internet sources – some probably less than a quid. I'd go for one of these from a reputable UK supplier **LINK**

A fleabay seller says "Fitted with Tamiya style charge lead and both BEC and JR style receiver plugs for convenience." Possibly not the definitive source of accurate information, but I would take that to mean that this battery has a fairly comprehensive set of connections. Any combination or permutation can be used.

Personally, I would get rid of the resistor controller unless there was some pressing need to keep it. Unless the motor and board are a perfect match, a modern ESC offers control that is so much better, and often have a BEC built in to make connecting so much easier.

The bobs board must be a good match for your motor, you've used it before. I still have a model with one of these in, and it still works. It's true that they are antiquated, inefficient and crude, but they are also simple, easy to understand, and you already have one. No problems in my book.

The 6 volt battery will run the motor for quite a while, so that's ok. For the receiver, either a bec as Dave says, or a separate RX battery. My only comment is that the bec will cut out when the battery gets down to 5.5 volts, and you'll have no control. We all know that shouldn't happen, we bring the model in before that happens, but in the real world……….?

I've just done some Googling and found the battery. As I suspected, it has a two-wire lead terminating in a JST plug (small red one). This is intended to be fitted into a separate BEC unit which in turn provides the 5v needed for the receiver. Take a look at the second photo of the unit I suggested in my earlier link and you'll see it has a corresponding JST socket.  If you fit the JST or the JR plug directly into the receiver then you'll possibly blow it up – a fully-charged 6v NiMH pack can put out as much as 7.5v. As Chas says, the drop-out voltage is 5.5. On balance I would advise either an electronic speed controller with its own BEC or a separate receiver battery pack.
