Just a daft question from a newbie, I`m building a sratch build Thames V tug, As shown in Marine modelling International. The dimensions are 124.5cmx 32.5cm. The real size of the original tug is.24.90mx6.5m The scale is 1.20 How do they calculate what scale the model is ?

          Hello Andy

It's very easy to work out the scale of the model

Full size ship is 24.9 metres = 24900mm

          model is 124.5cm = 1245mm

          scale is 24900 divided by 1245 = 20

If the scale of the model is 1:20 then a dimension of 20 metres on the real ship will become 1 metre on the model. Something which was 20 cm long will be 1 cm long on the model, something 80 cm long will be 4 cm long on the model and so on, just divide the real dimension by 20 to get the size on the model.

The real ship is 24.90 m long which is 2490 cm. The length of the model will be 2490 cm divided by 20 which is 124.5 cm.

              Hi Bob,

You just beat me to that and I think your explanation is clearer than mine.

                Hello Gareth

I had to get my thinking cap on at first

In the Machine tool trade, we never worked in cm……Only mm
