Believe it or not Bob the full size hull you see above is the 1st ever so no wonder there are no photo’s kicking around on the web. Talk about getting in on the ground floor looks like I’m the 1st ever to model it ! cool (as the younger ones say)

having spent a few days away from this project I though I’d best tackle what will prob be the worst bit of plank bending there is on it the curved forward section of the inside

Suffice to say it took lots of steam to get it to bend, and yes I broke a couple in the process. there are some slight edge misalignments but nothing a goodly dose of sandpaper won’t cure

Here are a few more pics showing the state of play at lunch today

If you look closely you’ll see that the insides of the ribs have been squared out to more closely mirror the full size interior

          Coming on well, Phil!

You seem to be enjoying this project, it looks like the real thing with planks lying about in the bottom of the hull?

To avoid kinking the inner planking, you could have formed them round a mould first?

          Where will the motor go?

If you look further up this page bob the computer rendition shows a centre control consol with a seat in front of it, that is where the motor battery and water pump will be housed. the rx will be with the rudder servo between the transom and rear of the cockpit, trunking is being fitted under the bottom bords to carry the cables conecting the two areas and under the gunwale for the ariel.

Just a little more done this afternoon

              Looking very business like…………….and sturdy!

Congratulations for building a model of a boat that`s not sailed in the real world yet!

I should think the designer of the craft will be keeping an eye on your progress and it`s eventual sailing perfromance?

He certainly is Bob thats where I got the photo’s above from. If this turns out well, as I expect  it will, He’s thinking of commisioning me to build one for him, prob to display in the office no doubt.
A little more progress has been made

the yellow tube runs under the gunwhale and is to carry the tx antenna just in case I haven’t got a 2.4ghz setup by the time she’s ready for the water

Take your time!……………….It`s nearly finished!……….and then what?

The hull seems to have flats……….midships……….Is this correct?

There is a parralell section amidship Bob it seems scaleing down seems to have made this slightly more obvious and is something I will have to live with. still lots of wood work to do inside with the bottom boards, seats and control console plus once the top rubbing strip is on the exterior of the hull needs to be glass skinned. Need to order up some more wood 1st as out of the 31m of planking I got to do this I have about 500mm left.

Glass skinned?………………….Inside or out?……………..You`ll need to do it carefully, it`s really ugly stuff!

I would simply use filler and paint!………………….Bob

I will be skinning the outer Bob exactly as the full size. provided you use laminating resin and lightweight tissue/cloth rub down well and finish with a pre coulored gel coat the finish can be good enough to not need paint. just look at the shine on this full size hul

Here’s some piccy’s of todays efforts. the speckled finish on the decks is courtesy of a sudden rain shower as I fetched the hull in to photo it

close up of the motor bay showing the bty posn. the centre seat and control console will fit over this lot

with the bty removed you can see the water intake. hopefully  a pump will fit on the other side of the prop tube under the bty

Inside the steerage compartment. the rx Ariel runs inside the yellow tube which in turn runs just under the stb gunwale. just visible is the water outlet pipe heading for just below the waterline at the stb aft 1/4

this view clearly shows the tube conduits from the motor bay back to the compartment housing the rx, the cooling outlet pipe runs in one and the signal wire from esc to rx will run up the other

Finally a shot of the underside showing the rudder and prop and the water scoop next to the skeg amidships and a close up of the scoop this protrudes enough to allow glass fibre skinning and installing it before skinning will hopefully ensure it’s well sealed

On the rain speckled picture……the motor looks rather on the small size?…………Is it similar to the Barrel Back?

No Bob its a std brushed 550, I’m going to power it with the  6v 4Ah pb that you see in the pics. with a 55/60mm 3 blade brass prop it should give me at least 3knts thats scale speed (full size does a claimed 20knts)  hopefully it’ll do slightly better than 3 but then I don’t intend to terrorise the ducks with it

I once glassed an MTB hull and made a real hash of it……I ended up with an “orange peel” skin and ruined the model.
Like Bob I now stick to filler and paint so I am looking forward to a master class in how to do it properly.

Ok lads well I don’t know about a master class but sure I show you a way to do it without making a mess. I have to say DO NOT buy resin from a car spares shop its no good at all if you want some light reading try downloading this PDF guide while it doesn’t refer directly to boats it does give you an idea of procedures.Enjoy

Now I have to hang my head in shame. to cut cost I’ve followed your advice Bob and Paul and used P38 to skin over the Hull. Before you all start crowing  let me explain. The cost of laminating resin, glass tissue and the base adhesive + specialist tools was likely to exceed £45 to do the job with P38 and a fine surface filler has cost a mere £12. no contest given the finish is equally good and the extra strength of GRP is only justified in the full size version.

so on to some pics. The 1st is the P38 applied, 2nd is the nearly finished job primered and fine surface filler applied to the blemishes shown up by the primer, and waiting for a final rub down with 800 grit wet or dry before applying a couple of coats of white primer ready for the gloss white and red or green below the water line.
While doing the outer hull it occured that I should also progress the decks so out came the teak stain and after just 2 coats of varnish the result is looking promising

I`ve never liked FG on the outside anyway……..but it`s still a big job, spreading P38 all over!

Things have been happening in the winks workshop spurred on no doubt by the steam rally at Cricket St Thomas this weekend where my humble creations will once again be on public display. the outside of the hull is now in primer and the bilges all painted white, and the varnishing of the decks etc proceeds satisfactorily with 3 coats applied

As you can see I’ve opted for a red/white colour scheme as the paint and leatherette for the seats was already in my stock cupboard and so a saving was made.
Just thought on you like an object in the photo to give scale don’t you Bob? so just for you here’s one of the model c/w the ships dog

Thanks Bob for those kind words. still quite a bit to do though apart from the lengthy finishing process on the hull paintwork there is a fairly complex piece of joinery to construct the centre console and forward seat. also hardwareinthe form of cleatsand fairleads. then there’s the thorny issue of a skipper and crew plus I reckon it needs some fishing rods, bait bucket, picnic hamper and beer in a cool box maybe even a scale ships dog too.
As for the man  in the states not a whisper for about a month so I’m emailing these latest pics in the hope that he’s got some of the real ones centre console for reference.

and there’s somewhere to keep the fish once caught

to be accurate Bob it is 9.5 inches long so at 1:8th scale that would make it a 76 inch rod and thats prob about right for a fly rod for use on a boat. the bucket is a little large but then they do have bigger fish to carry home in America  1st day of the show went well today could’ve been a little busier but tomorrow looks like being busier according to form
