          Hi Jeff,

I don't think we have many Offshore racers on this Forum. Have you checked out OMRA **LINK**

          or

          BMPRS **LINK**

If you want to design and run a model then you need to be assured that there is somewhere you can actually operate it! Not much point otherwise!

going to run in the sea, but want to use a lawn mower engine, but well silenced. if they can run jetski's i'm sure i can run the powerboat.

              Hi Jeff

Do you plan to use a prefab hull or try and build one from scratch? Give the guys (and girls, Sorry Amy and others) an idea as to what to offer.

              Cheers

              Andy

                Hello Jeff

Take a look at Amy J`s thread…."Birthday boat" on this website

It`s a heavy duty sea going monster with a big motor!

                It`s an excellent build

                Bob

                  Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the forum, I'm almost next door to you… well in Scarborough wink

I've never been adventurous to build a boat that could finish up in Norway… I mean all that sea and no pondside to stop it if the rudder goes AWOL! Your post did set me thinking though about whether there are any other contributers to the forum close to me. There is no club as such in Scarborough and since I moved here I've been told that boaters do sail on the Mere but I've been down there a couple of times but not seen anybody. Re there any Scarbourians out there?

going to try and design my own hull, the way i think of it is that i can design my own glider, i can learn basic hydrodynamics. got some ideas about sharkskin as well. really need to find the right thread so i can chat more and not clog the welcome thread. lol p.s i think the finished boat will be about 7 foot long and split into two bits.

                      Hi There Jeff, welcome aboard!

Us builders hang out on the scratch build forum.

Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with, sounds an ambitous project. ( Get a good handle on the basic principles and the rest will fall into place ). Remember there are no silly questions, though some of the answers may be… I'm having a lot of fun with my build……

                          Hello Jeff

A build after my own heart.

A 7ft power boat will need a lot of power to make it go fast, I would say that you will need a single fluid cooled engine of between 150 > 200cc.

You mentioned using a lawn mower engine I'm sorry to say that most of these type of engines are air cooled and that if you do use one of these you will have to make substantial allowances for cooling fans / ducting.

If this were my project I would be looking for a liquid cooled motorbike engine and then design the boat around it.

                          Paul

                                Hello.

Just a couple of thoughts on using a lawn mower engine.

Most air cooled stationary engines are over finned, that is the cooling fin area is much more than they need. Most lawn mowers spend most of there lives with the cooling fins clogged with grass clippings, but never seem to over heat. If the cooling shroud is left on, and the air intake on any engine cover on the boat is a little larger than the air intake on the engine, and the air exit is a little larger than the intake, there shouldn't be a problem. This is how I have set up my boat. I shall be testing her in the next week or two, so If I'm wrong I'll let you know, and lick the egg off my face! Oh yes, I'm assuming a two stroke engine, If you try to run a vertical shaft 4 stroke horizontal, then the oil pump wont be imersed in the sump oil on all most all lawn mower engines

                                All the best

                                Aj
