I am a born again model boat man. I was a keen participant during the sixties and seventies. However I moved on to other things. Now, like a boomerang I have come back!Since I left the hobby Im amazed hoe advanced the electronics have advancd.he info I hope someone will advise me about is the following……. I have acquired a Graupner Belfast and am astounded to learn the manufacturers Speed controller is priced at 119 quid! I would very much appreciate if some kind soul could advise me of the alternative and any alteration needed to use a substitute. I do not have the luxury of a nearby model shop for advice as I stay in the NW Highlands and m nearest model shop is many, many miles away! hank you in anticipation. Hector MacKenzie

Advice on speed controllers

Hi Hector

To get useful advice you need to relate the current size and propulsion type for the experienced modellers on the channel The more information about the boat size the better advice you will get

So what is the motor size ,the voltage advised by Graupner ,the prop size .

I,m not conversant with Graupner products as I only scratch build and yes the knowledge I have has been freely given by the members on this site .Good luck with your search Michael

HI Hector, can you see any markings on the motors? like 400 etc, if not contact CMB for the motor details, they are very helpful. If you want independent motor control IE Port and Starboard (2 motors together) i would suggest looking at the Component Shop site, they supply the ESC's batteries etc.

Running some numbers, at 1:150 scale an 80000 HP ship requires the motors to output about 20 Watts. Thats a couple of amps at 12 volts. Double the number to allow for model inefficiencies and then add a bit for a safety margin. Thats still under 10 amps, plenty of ESCs in that range at very sensible prices.

What batteries are recommended? How many motors fitted? Do you want them all on one control or controlled individually? Does the recommended ESC have a part number so we can guess at its capabilities?

The "Schottky diode board" in the shopping list is actually the P103 Parallel Power board. To save money you could omit one of the battery packs and the P103 as well as the four P95's. The motors are almost certainly 5-pole 385's. P94 is £79 but will give you the choice of independent port/starboard motor control (tank steering) or using a motor/rudder mix. You could alternatively use one standard speed controller to operate the two port motors and another for the starboard motors – each pair wired in parallel. In that case there are two brand new 20A ACTion Condor ESCs for sale elsewhere on this forum.

You can omit the smoke unit, fan, P68S and P95's and ignore the reference to P101 Amp. 12v SLA batteries are shown but only because that customer wished to use them. I'd fit NiMH pack(s).
