hello everyone, im new to this site and wonderd if any one can help. i have nitro trucks but managed to get hold off a old boat. its a big boat looks like a cruiser type speed boat. it has a merco 49 engine inside, ive taken the engine out and cleened it up. i havent got a clue wat type off fuel it runs on or much about the engine or boat. id like to get the engine running and get the boat in the water. any tips on the engine woud be great. fuel.etc many thanks jay.

Any standard “nitro” fuel with about 5% nitromethane will do. We used to call it “glow fuel”……………..

thanks for leting me no, im going to try and start the engine any tips on best way to start, which direction do i turn , im used to nitro trucks with pull start . thanks for your help.jay

hi ya there Jay

At the present time I am running an Enya 19 vintage engine in the Surfury. I am using nitro fuel, however, this has 5% synthetic oil and 5% castor oil in the mix. According to the people in the know (at the boat club – which I belong to) and who run vintage glow engines, this mix should be okay and equivalent to the ‘old’ Keilkraft mix of fuel. Having said that though – there are one or two members who say that it is adviseable after a run of the engine to run a drop of 3 in 1 oil through the engine by hand.

A 12 volt electric starter – similar to the type which the aircraft lot use (for starting their engines) is a good bonus. This is the first thing I acquired.

A few thoughts there for you.

hi john, thanks for al the info u told me every thing i need to no, got to get fuel from local model shop then going to try and start the engine, when u turn it with the electric starter do u r un it with short bursts or constent till starts. thanks jay.

Hi there Jay

I find just using short bursts of the electric starter normally does the job – I presume you will already have the heater glow start which clips on to the top of the plug – it makes life a lot easier.

yeh i have the glow starters i do have a nitro monster truck so kind off used to nitro engines but never had a boat engine. its a old engine and boat so woud love to c it running again. are u in the usa.

Just a small point but as you are used to aircooled engines I would advise checking that the cooling system works before you send the boat out and for its first run I would leave the cover / cabin off just to allow cool air into the hull.

Running 3 in 1 oil through the engine after running is a very good thing to do.
