          Shah. I think you need to speak to a shop that sells fast boats/racing boats/offshore types, Prestwich model boats, for instance;

          There are too many factors to be considered for a powerboat such as you are contemplating…. Hull form, Prop location (sub-surface or surface drive, type of drive..battery selection (voltage and type) and so on to even guess what motor you should be looking at, at this stage; and do you want to just go fast or actually race?? if its racing you are going for, a club is a must fir this aspect of model boats.

          There must be powerboat forums out there, they would likely be a better bet for this, it is a bit specialised.

          If this is your first boat, it may be advisable to start slightly smaller and get the hang of the gear and indeed the controlling of a boat at high speed.

              Ashley has it right. Boats are not cars or planes and have their own requirements. Building a large fast boat as a first is probably a quick way to lose a considerable amount of money and gain a high level of discouragement. High performance always means seeing how near to disaster you can get – with cars and planes, if something 'orrible happens, you get to look at the bits and salvage something. This is not always the case with a boat. Learn on something smaller, with less investment in time. money and effort.

              Many people learn to drive in a Ford Focus – not many do it in a Focus RS WRC and survive. Similarly with a boat.

                hello there

                Although I totally agree with the above postings to a point – I am slightly wary of going to certain model shops for advice on boat selection and soforth. In my past experience one or two of the model shops rather like to sell the most expensive model they can – but NOT ALL ARE LIKE THAT MIND – but whether what they suggest fits your requirements or not sometimes doesnt matter. Also, I believe we are dealing with a young 'ish' chap here and we want him to stick with the hobby and enjoy it. So, myself, I would try and stear him towards the Club 500s a relatively easy model to build and there are a lot of clubs who run Club 500 races. If he goes this way to begin with, this may encourage him to expand his field.

                aye

                  Someone once compared full-size powerboat racing to standing under a cold shower while tearing up £50 notes. From correspondence with several OMRA guys while developing a failsafe for petrol engines I can safely say that the only difference between the full-size and model-size is the shower. I would endorse everything that's been said but if you simply MUST have the biggest and fastest boat then you MUST go to the experts like Dave Marles @Prestwich Models or Alan Shillito @ Astec. Be prepared for a very steep learning curve and don't expect much change from a grand……………..
