        Hello Tony?….Slow but sure, hey?

The formers could do with a temporary top keel to centralise them

Bob, a temporary top keel is an excellent idea until planking is complete – thanks. Slow progress and likely to get slower, it will soon be time time to start using model making time to carry out maintenance to existing craft, prior to the spring time when a visit to the lake will be possible. Really enjoying building this one though, so much that I was looking at Vic Smeeds Pilot II, after reading one of the Model Boats specials.

Larry, I plan to plank it in balsa, as it will be covered in card to replicate plating. Yours is progressing nicely, you should be on the water long before me.

Started to plank the central part of the hull at the bottom. Due to the radius of the bulkheads 1/8" planks are being used. As planking progresses 1/4" or 3/8"planks can be used. Time now to start to taper the planks at the ends.

                Hello Tony

You need to align and secure the top section before proceeding with the planking

That's what I would do anyway

                  Hi Bob,

You are quite right, one of the bulkheads is slightly out of square and a (couple of) temporary aligning piece(s) at the top would allow this to be corrected. It would add stability as well. Thanks for the help and advice.

This hull is going to need a lot of sanding to shape.

                  Tony.

                              Hello Tony

This is the Louis Heloise photo I was referring to in your PM

                              LH page 1

The ribs were open at the top and very wibbly wobbly!

So I glued temporary cross beams, marked the centre line on each crossbeam and aligned all the ribs with a flexible central guide.

Worthy of the Eureka Moments thread?

                              Bob

As soon as the weather picks up I will start on the Tigermoth. What would it look like with floots?

Yes I hear you saying Larry "what about the Jenny".Well I put filler on the hull, then if it's warm I will catalyes some resin and get om with me boat.

PS.love the Boat you seem an ace on the wear finish.Last time I did that was when a mate and I built up British and German Tanks with mods made with plaster card.(60s)

Continued with planking at the bottom after making a temporary support (and bulkhead bridges) at the top, similar to the one which Bob suggested. Support was made from hard balsa, glued, pinned and taped in place. This really makes the whole hull much sturdier to continue with the planking – Thanks Bob

I won't bore you with any more photos until the planking is now completed.

Forgot to mention earlier, the support also allowed the slightly out of square bulkhead to be corrected. It was only slightly out of square and wouldn't have caused any problems and wouldn't have been seen, but I would have worried about it.

Thanks again Bob. Any news on Glasgow?

Larry, I realise your moulded hull has enabled your Guardsman to be built much faster (and cheaper), but I am really enjoying working with this balsa hull. I realise progress with mine is very slow, but as long as I have one of my fleet ready to sail this coming spring/summer, I won't get too upset.

I plated my early Guardsman with plasticard and used PVA applied witha cocktail stick for rivets- miles over scale but lots of fun. I look forward to seeing the rest of your build.
