Does anyone know of a good and reliable online retailer who sells clear and tinted translucent plastic sheet. I am looking for A4 size grey ("smoke&quot tinted or similar and don't want to purchase very large sheets. Also advice please – there are several types of sheet material – polycarbonate, pvc, polystyrene and I don't know which is best for windows in a model boat. I've ruled out acrylic ("Perspex&quot as it is inflexible and prone to shatter.

I use a sheet material called acetate which comes in A4 & A3 sizes and can be clear or coloured (or you can colour it yourself with spirit based inks)

Acetate is a card crafters material available from places like Hobbycraft

There are typically two thicknesses of craft acetate, Thin which is like tissue paper and Thick which is like a stiff paper and the one that I use .

I have loads of A4 thick clear acetate and if you get stuck I would be happy to post some to you.

I have just been to this place, a modellers heaven. It is called the 4d Model shop and has a vast range of stuff, for general and architectural model making. Worth making a note of, even if only to browse the website and see just what is out there..    I shall be glazing something soon and was pondering this very question,, I happen to have a stack of thin clear stuff thrown out from work that I am going to use, not decided on the glue yet. May put a very thin smear of epoxy around the windows and put them carefully in place ? or is it better to get "canopy glue".

Having tried just about all of them I can only suggest you use 'canopy glue'. RC Modellers Craft Glue is my preference.

                  Paul, Ashley and Dave,

Thank you for your advice – I shall look for acetate sheet – clear sheet is readily available but grey tinted sheet is not so readily available (though I have found a retail source but only supplies large quantity).

I had thought of car window tinting material but I suspect it is very thin (ie only a few 10's of microns thickness)

                  I'll continue my quest.

Car tinting sheet would fit over clear sheet and give the appropriate dimness?

Years ago I raced R.C cars and found a grey spray paint which was see through dependent how many coats you gave it . Found in most good model shopswinkMichael

I was in Modelzone when they were on the verge of closing and the guy suggested that clear acetate sheets could be sprayed. Yet to try it, but will be giving it a go for the glazing in the hovercraft I have on the go.

Have to check in the garage for the make of the paint he suggested, but was going cheap and was really popular with the other modellers. Was flying off the shelves.

Tamiya produce a spray can for painting clear car bodies and I have used the grey one for tinted windows on clear plastic sheet. Depth of colour depends on how much you apply. I found it tends to be a bit splattery but that may just be me.

I have just purchased a tin of Tamiya "smoke" spray paint, made for tinting Acrylic sheet etc.,as above. I can report that it works a treat, and one coat is hardly noticeable, but it builds with more coats. I should think that this would do you a treat. I did not have an issue with splatter…HOWEVER the chap said it sprayed much better if the tin was warmed up in very warm water first…which I did.

Found the name of the paints I bought. They are from Vallejo. The guy said they were OK and they did seem a popular choice at the time. Cheap too.
