      Hello guys,

I am a total novice in model boat building, these are my first couple attempts(from scratch) which I thought about sharing with you to see what you think.

It does not show much of a skill, everyone has to start somewhere as they say but I loved the challenge it brings. Also, still limited with tools and material and i am excited to explore more and improve myself with time and the help of your experience.

Impressive starter projects! Are you working in balsa and doing plank on frame, or are they solid? Were these to a plan? Are you interested in static display only, or might you want to move into working models?

I think some of the paintwork could be improved – did you use sanding sealer and sand down to a fine finish before applying colour? – but there is a lot to learn about finishing…

Looking at the type of ships you have made, you might be interested in this boat:

Yea both models are made according to a plan then a few changes.
Built the frame then doing plank. The viking one is made entirely of plywood even planking, the second one is made of plywood and balsa to plank.
I do agree the paint job isn’t tbe best, i was a little impatient while i should have given sanding to a fine finish more time and importance.
At the moment I am making only display models just to train and gain a bit of experience as a new stater.
Thank you for the links and feedback.
I am still struggling with finishing true which is a bit of a turn off to the viewer

Not at all! Finishing is a classic difficulty for ALL modellers, and you will find many discussions of the best way to achieve perfect finishes on all modelling forums. There are going to be lots of people here with ideas about sealing, priming and spraying on all sorts of surfaces – and you are doing the right thing in trying things out first – that is the only way to learn!

The Viking boat would probably look better with shields along the sides, and the string dyed with tea to look more like rope. I love the little rope-ladder – it's those details which really make a model stand out. On the Steam Launch link I gave you you will see a little deck-chair which is there for exactly the same reason! Using matt paints also makes a model look less toy-like, and a finishing overall lacquer makes the finish more robust….

Thank you for the tip about using the matt paint instead, you are absolutely right. I might start a new project in the new year and take a more detailed approach and see how it turns out then post it in this forum. Thank you for the help.
Is there any works of yours i can see?

Ah, I am not a modeller you would want to emulate – there are far better examples of work out there than mine. I am more interested in saving old boat plans from being lost, and so I run a few web sites dedicated to this.

A couple of my sites feature plans and examples of some of the small cheap balsa models which were sold in the 1960s to learners starting out on the hobby, which is why I gave you that link to the Steam Launch. They are all small enough to be simple display models. Many of the pictures on that site – all the 50+ ones – are examples of mine. See **LINK**

This is my most recent – which I'm quite happy with: **LINK**

I think there are quite a few examples for me to try and gain some experience.
I got a few more ideas which I might apply as well. Keep up the good work. Thank u
