Thanks to everyones help on the forum I've been able to get my trawler afloat. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFtExE39n_k

I only get a thimble of water leaking in and this is when I put the trawler into reverse. I'm not sure how to stop this unless I don't reverse the boat which is not a problem. I'm guessing this may be a common problem as water is forced up the shaft rather than away from it. The shaft and rudder are greased with waterproof marine grease.

The easiest/laziest solution is to build small dam on the bottom of the hull, directly under the upper end of the tube, so that any water stays in there and can be sucked up with a syringe.

O – and watch out for swans! They may not be able to break a human arm with one flap of their wings but they can sure make a mess of a model boat that comes too close.

Excellent suggestion, I will give that a go. No swans were harmed in the making of my video, though it does give the impression I'm heading for it (trick of the camera)smiley

Just completed my dam as suggested by Dave. Boxed in the upper end of the tube and made water tight by lining with fibre cloth and a couple of dabs of z-poxy. Should hold a couple of thimbles of water.
