Hello

I'm totally new and am working on a 1:50 plank on frame kit. I've cocked up and find that the two halves of the hull don't match. I have sanded down the problem area so much that I'm down to a very thin layer of wood.

Can someone please recommend a filler that I can use on the hull to fill in the gaps, and to build up a layer or two, before sanding it down to hopefully get an acceptable shape.

Filler is not intended to be a structural material. It would be better to add some of the material you are making the hull out of.

For instance, if I was planking in obeche, and I found that I was having to sand the hull very thin, I would glue some obeche planking onto the inside, overlapping the thin area, so that if I had to sand the outer planking completely away there would still be a solid base to work on….

Hi Aidan

If the hulls going to be painted on the outside I'd use P38 Car body filler or Plastic padding filler to build up the thickness and it's quite strong if your making the boat float at some stage.

Hi Aiden and welcome to the forum.

The issue is, the hull is thin at the over sanded area, so adding filler on the outside is counterproductive in that it will make is fat again. Perhaps glass cloth and Z-poxy resin on the back would be better? This will strengthen the hull, prevent leaks and you can leave the planks alone (externally)
