      Hello

Made balsa models during the 50’s and some ply boat modelling in the 70’s.  Recently retired and to pass the time I have decided to start boat modelling again.  As in the 70’s, money is tight so I am going for scratch building and have bought the plans for the John Parker 20’s Runabout.  As it will be my first build in a long time I shall make it from simple materials, lite ply and birch or beech (whatever I can get from the nearest model shop, Western Valley Models in Risca).  If I want I can make a Mahogany version in the future.

What I would like to know is : what is the best quick drying adhesive to use on these materials?

      Thanks and best regards

      Robert

I would use an Aliphatic resin glue. Nice to use, water clean up and waterproof when dry.

You shouldn’t have any problems in getting hold of it as there are several brands but you could check out DeLuxe Materials http://www.deluxematerials.com/ and

They have a standard aliphatic plus a Super Phatic glue which is not dissimilar to superglue except that it is water cleanup. It’s more expensive than standard aliphatic but it does bond very quickly and I like working with it as I am allergic to most superglues.

Thanks Colin.  I will take your advice particularly as the model is of plank construction and holding planks in a position that they do not want to be in for a long time is not very appealing.

                Best regards

Western Valley Models in Risca sounds like it might not be in the UK. Yes? No?

                            Hi Dave

Peter is correct, I’m in Cwmbran, and Western Valley Models is the other side of the mountain not far from Newport, UK.

                            Cheers
