Have you had an answer from the museum?

As a structural engineer I find the launching system of GE fascinating, trying to get into Brunels mind set as he tried to balance huge mass and inertia with budget constraints and untested systems.

No computers, no previous launches of this size, it really was one small step for man.

          Hi Paul

No reply at the moment……Not really expecting one!

I don`t suppose many people at the Museum will know anyway?

And also, I suppose it is a sort of Holiday period?

It was a big gamble, considering the * never been done before * part of the equation

While you`re on………Have you sailed the new Brutus yet?

I`ve contacted two Geograph posters, who have posted the Museum Ramps on Geograph

But no explanation for descent orientation

No reply from the Museum, but take a look at the thread dated…..24-02-16

The day I phoned the Museum and it even gives the person's name that I spoke to

Let's call the matter closed now?

Can't close it now I've sent requests to the British Museum, National Maritime Museum and Liverpool Maritime Museum in the hope that one of these collections have the answer.

We couldn't leave out the old Great Eastern Pub at Rock Ferry

With it's collection of Great Eastern relics

The pub was demolished a few years ago, but what became of the memorabilia?

This is the famous GE Flagpole at Anfield

Some of the deck cabins were sold off and used as Summer Houses

                      Where are they now?

Do we realise gentlemen, that this thread is one of the finest collections of Great Eastern memorabilia!

It's hard to believe, but it's a fact…….It's now in it's tenth year

Any person seeking information on the great ship, could search this forum and also the model build thread and even ask questions at the moment and discover hitherto unknown facts that most people are completely unaware of?

It's a Treasure Trove of information that the ModelBoats Magazine ought to take advantage of somehow

It will be a great shame, if the collection ever gets disbanded

There are not many threads of similar status……..Except Tony Hadley's history of Vic Smeed models

Feel free to post anything of GE interest

                          Captain Bob

You are right about this thread being a source of knowledge and even though it is second hand it still has merit especially from the perspective of the model builder.

You are the obvious choice to collate all of the information and separate the 'wheat from the chaff' to produce a viable model builders archive.

This is your opportunity to create something tangible for posterity, in many ways a potent mix of Brunel and Smeed.

                            Many thanks, Paul

If you remember, it was you and a few others, who encouraged me to build the model in the first place and describe the build blow by blow, way back in 2007

It's been a labour of love and I think, set the trend for build threads

Its all well and good showing us pictures but they don't tell the whole story as this would make a great article for the magazine.

Take the top image for example you could go into depth explaining how the hull plates were made and how you formed those rivet heads.

Come on and get your quill out.

                                    Hi Paul

I`ve just been looking at the Thread in 2007

The write up is there, but no pictures

Luckily, the pictures still exist in the gallery

If there is a demand for the build thread, I may make a start……..But it is a massive task

Its not such a massive task.

A couple of days to go through the thread and extract the good stuff.

Put the good stuff in chronological order and flesh out the bones with explanatory text on how you built the model and how you did the research.

Working part time you could have an easy ten pages of text and photos by the end of the week.

If much of the material has already been seen on the website then it is unlikely that Paul Freshney would want to run it as a magazine article. That is why I have only posted limited material about my fishery cruiser.

My model of tea clipper Ariel is coming along slowly, have painted the hull below the waterline, did the first test to see if she would float without leaking, passed with flying colors I am happy to say! Have to finish off the sails, and the deck planking.have the rods cut for the lead keel that will be removable for transporting.

My Great Great Grand Father Captain Commander William Harrison the First Captain 1856 but he was drowned in Southhampton waters in 1860. There were other captains after him.The only relic I have is copies of letter he send to his wife, a cousin of mine has a piece of the first telegraph cable laid by the ship but that was after grandfather died.

There is quite a bit about GE on the web if anyone is interested.
