There was a very interesting program on the telly the other day

It was about the launch of the Great Eastern

As usual, they showed the famous existing ramps

For years I've looked at the ramp and could never sort out why the ramp didn't descend towards the water!

Decided to contact the Brunel museum, once and for all!

      Mystery solved!

The ramp was removed from the Thames foreshore and repositioned outside the museum!

Many thanks…..Katie Edwards at the Museum

A short promotion video has appeared on YouTube

        BBC Coast Series 7

The full prog video has not been released yet, but it will, eventually

Sorry to bore you all again, but the involvement with the BBC and the staff etc, not to mention the outdoor filming was a very exciting period for me and will never be forgotten

Here is a screen shot, showing Mark Horton and the writer, having a quiet sail round Hoylake Pool, during a quiet period

        Bob

        Oooops…….Picture to follow, chaps

Still not got the car as the DVLA coc-ed up the registration documents (they didn't class it for disabled use) so now I hope to get it this Wednesday……….but I'm not holding my breath.

                  …..

Can you imagine manufacturing and storing on board ship…..2500 miles of electrical cabling!….in 1866!
It seams that the cable was a sort of armoured single core…..but can an electrical signal be sent down a single core?…..Did they use the sea to complete the circuit?

                  …..

                  Bob

You just need the Earth to complete the circuit. Telegraphy was fairly well established by then – they had a cable to France in 1850…

                      Hello Eduardo B from Colombia

I prefer to discuss the model on this Forum, rather than by Email

There are no plans available to build the Great Eastern

I used the plans for a Paddle steamer, Jeanie Deans, and adapted it accordingly

I also researched the Web for any information regarding dimensions etc

The original build was in 2007

I will post a link shortly, if you are interested

                        HI Bob,Guys,

As you have said Bob there are no plans for the Great Eastern, but Marcle Models UK have a card kit at 200;1scale that I used to build my working model.

I copied the formers and frames on to ply, you could in large to what ever scale you want.

                        Cheers,

                        Hutch

Eduardo………The model was built in 2007

Since then, there has been a drastic website change…….About 2009……I am guessing here

The original write up was scrapped, but on the photos of the build, the captions are still available

Refer to the photo album for the early photos of the build

Just found this photo on the net

I often type in a strange vague reference to historical events and hope something crops up, such as this

I recognise this beach as being Cable Bay near Rhosneigr………Anglesey and looks about as it was in GE`s days?

We were here a few months ago, but there is no sign of cable activity

I find any reference to GE`s cable laying days of great interest, hope some of you do too?

                                  Bob

In the same search, this photo cropped up!

                                    Why was that, Bob?

Because it`s the wreck of the paddle steamer…….Rhosneigr

Doesn`t it look scary and sinister?………..Luckily, no lives were lost

There must be other photos of the wreck, somewhere on the Net?

We used to see this wreck at low tide off the coast road at Rhos on Sea, near Llandudno, but not anymore.

The engine and paddles are now safe inside Liverpool Maritime Museum

                                        Hello Len

Welcome back……..Your Resurgem build was sorely missed

The photo was taken about 1986

The PS Rhosneigr was on a pleasure trip from Rhyl to Rhos on Sea, about 1910, when it struck a submerged object and sank

                                        All on board were rescued

Incidentily, Rhos on Sea used to have an exceptionally long pier, which was removed during the war, for security reasons

                                        All the best ……..Bob

I also find the GE cable laying tasks very intresting, how they ever managed to find the cut end during the Atlantic crossing is astounding.

I`m pleased that you share my interest in the GE cable laying era

There are quite a few others out there too, as the view count goes up every day……….But not a word is spoken!

There are lots of souveneirs out there based on the actual cable off cuts and used for all sorts of novelty nick nacks

I have yet to find a single relic connected to GE though………We look in all the junke shops
