How do you achieve a neat finish when forming Windows in 3mm ply which will have clear plastic adhered to the inner surface of the ply so the 3mm of ply is exposed Looking forward to your helpful responses. This is my first model “Ellie” thanks you

There is a thread on here called "Prototype build of Ellie" which I assume is the same model boat.

Yes there is indeed and although I’ve read a number of times I don’t see any relevant answer to my Ellie problem . I have made the cabin in a thicker plywood than Bob used

To make a proper window you need to create a window frame and mount the glass in a similar way to full-scale practice.

More simply, you can get quite a good effect by using a thickish grade of clear plastic – perhaps 0.5mm – and cut it to size to fit individual window openings. It is easy to file down to get a good fit, and then you can decide just how much of an indent you want. Once in place the plastic can be secured by a thin bead of canopy glue around the edge from inside…

                Hello Ian

If I remember right, I simply glued strips of plastic on the inside wall

Then clear varnished the windows and inside edges

We would be very interested on seeing a few photos of your build please?

I only wish I had your skill Bob. I have planked the hull and top decks as I could not buy readily 1mm ply. Thankfully I don’t self abuse as my sanding arm wouldn’t cope with the amount of sanding required

                          Hello Ian

Are you still enjoying the french hospitality?

The choice of fitting and style of windows is usually left up to the individual builder as there is such a wide range of preferences.

The easy way is to tidy up the edges of the window cutouts and stick a piece of clear plastic or acetate on the inside, alternatively you might want to improve the design by including window frames [in either timber or metal] or even go to the extent of having opening windows.

I opt for the easy method and apply a thin coating of fine wood-filler to the open (cut edges) of the ply before tidying up with fine grit paper, this seals the ply and produces a nice flat surface with crisp square edges prior to painting.

I hope this helps but if I can be of more assistance please don't hesitate to ask.

                          All the best

                          Paul

No Paul now touring North East of Scotland.I think your suggestion of filling the edges of 3mm ply is exactly what I’ll do,followed by using 0.5mm clear plastic set back 1mm will be the best solution.

                              Hi Ian

Filling the edge of the ply is fiddly but can produce a very nice finish, it will also provide a good clean edge for scribing in the windows.

You are certainly getting about in your touring holiday and I am slightly jealous but I wouldn't want your fuel bill.

                              Have fun with the midges

                                Hi Ian

When fitting windows I use good quality ply sandwiched between 2 scrap pieces of ply . all 3 pieces are tacked together ,then when cut the middle cut out will have clean edges . Some will think its a waste of material but for me to save time and effort trying to clean up edges it is the best result . Try it out and establish for your self how well you can make very good windows . Please remember to use a fine tooth blade .

My Elle is up in the spare bedroom as ill health will not allow me time to steer clear of the toilet for long enough time to do anything worth while wink

                                  Hello Mike

That's a good way of creating crisp window edges, but it'll be a bit tricky, actually knowing where they are on the model?………unless of course, the outer piece is similar to the cabin wall in size

Deepest sympathy with your health problem……My brother has similar discomfort

There is a way round it of course?

                                  Regards

                                  Bob

Wish I had not been a stereotypical frugal Scot and had dipped into my wallet (releasing the squadron of moths!) and bought 1.5 mm ply. for both the hull and cabin sides. I've ended up planking on frame absolutely everything which is incredibly time consuming. My left wrist is useless for anything now with much sanding still to be done.( but at least my eyesight has not suffered. ) Hope Ellie is not too top heavy and that the twin 600 motors push her along nicely. Much wishful thinking now as I'm months away, I think, from the initial launch.
