Hi- I would like to make 50 mm high stanchions for the handrails round my version of Ellie.

I have 1.8 mm stainless steel rod which I would like to use.however my problem is to know how to drill 0.75 mm holes at mid height of the stanchion.

Am I being too adventurous or is there a way this can be sensibly achieved?

Look forward to your kind comments

      Ian

          Hi Ian.

If you get a block of mild steel say 12mm thick you can drill it to take your rod diameter to just over the depth of the position of the cross hole, then cross drill a hole at the correct position. If you slide your rod in the hole and drill through the cross hole you should end up with the rod drilled.

You are being far too adventurous in my opinion

            1.8mm dia?……… With a 0.75mm drilled hole?

            Stainless steel?

I would suggest that you buy them or at least make them from 3mm brass tube, similar to the type I made for Silver Mist

            Viz……

Thank you Brian and Bob for your replies.

Brian while I understand that your suggestion is very practical and will work I think perhaps Bob is correct in that I'm being too adventurous. I was trying to adhere closely, probably too closely,to the scale. More importantly, being a stereo typical Scot, I was trying to use material I already have procured by some means or other!

Bob thank you for these excellent photographs and I will make them using the materials you suggest. I have already made the pulpit and pushpit from 2 mm brass rod.

Thanks again very much indeed guys

Hi changed my thoughts about the handrails.

I'm making them using 2.3 mm dowelling for the uprights with 3 number 5 mm plastic beads fitted to the dowelling drilled 2.3 vertically and to 0.5 mm horizontally. I have also used 0.3 mm stainless steel wire to replicate the usual 6 mm wire between the uprights. This solution is considerably cheaper than brass rod and easier I think for the novice builder like me
