      Hi

      I have scratch built a Musketeer – http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/16814/musketeer-mm1111

I fitted it with a Graupner BB700 Turbo motor. Unfortunately the performance is woeful so I am wondering whether I have the wrong prop. Can anyone recommend a prop size, type for this boat?

      Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick. Welcome to the forum.

Could you tell us what battery voltage/type and prop details you are currently using please?

The bb700 is quite a hot motor and performance should be more than adequate with this.

Thanks for the response – the battery pack is a 6 cell Nimh which I think is 7.2 volts. In fact I have two in parallel.

As to the prop it is a 39mm 3 blade prop. I have created an album Musketeer in which you can see photos of the boat and running gear.

Thanks very much for having a look.

            Kind regards, NIck

Nick. This motor is capable of running at 19V or so, according to the quick surf I have had. Putting your batteries in series or getting a 12v pack or 3s 11.1v Lipo would make it go a bit better! You are not getting many revs on the 7.2V pack with this. How fast do you want to go?? Some will advise fitting a brushless/Lipo, but this entails more expense. Do you have other boats, and if so are they all Nimh and brushed??

A change of prop to twin blade 35mm may help. In fact, these props are so cheap it might be interesting to get a sleection…. one each of S30,35, S40 and The correcpondinbg X pitch ones same diameter.

Like Ashley says, running a 19 volt motor on 7.2 volts will give very sedate performance. Doubling the voltage will make the motor give more power, a smaller 2 blade prop will allow it to use that power and get your boat up to the speed you are looking for. Run time will be reduced because the current drawn will increase, but at the moment the long run time you get will seem even longer than it really is.

That's really helpful – thanks so much for your prompt response. May take me a while to get the prop substitutes sorted but I'll give the battery change a go shortly.

                  Thanks again, cheers, NIck
