      Hi Bob,

I have never done plank on frame so have some ?s.

1, will the formers be part of the hull or will they come out ?.

2, Are you just using glue or pins as well to attach planks ?.

3, Can you show in more detail the Lacky band and "S" hook fixing method.

      Thanks,

      Len.

        Hello Len

I`m pleased you`ve had a look at the gallery!

        Answers to your questions..

        1. The formers will be removed in their entirety……………..once the glue has set.

I just jig saw through the spine at every former……..then with a sharp hammer blow, the formers break away quite easily

2 . I use PVA glue in the construction…………….nails would cause a weakness…. as some of the planks are under great stress

        3. The lacky bands can be in singles or groups or chains………….but at each end, I bend a piece of wire into an "S" shape…one at each end…………….and hook onto any part of the structure

On the Great Eastern gallery, there is an S hook shown close up

        Thanks Len…………………Bob

           Hi Len

The Method Bob uses is self explanatory when you see the real thing and I was fortunate in gong round to Bob’s yesterday and just in time to help him fix plank 6 on each side of the boat !

No wonder Bob gets up early to fix another plank as the one we fixed at 4-00pm would’nt be ready for plank 7 until about 9-00pm,very time consuming business planking. Perhaps he could run seminars at these preset times for people like yourselves, and Joyce could do tea’s and bacon butties for a nominal charge.Well people do garden party’s don’t they ?,why not modelling party’s in the winter when most people are doing their new projects!

          How about that Bob !

Very interesting afternoon and all those ?s of yours Len were asked and answered with the model there in front of us, wonderful !!

You do need the right tools for the job though,a band saw a must!! cutting all those planks with a hand saw would be next to impossible!.

          An enlightened Ducky

            Hello Duckie

A nice posting there, Matey!………………very amusing and informative.

Your right about the essential tools though…….the bandsaw is invaluable for the formers and the 7`-0" plank production

This cold weather is no good for planking………………….the glue wasn`t quite set last night at 9.00

But this morning, I grappled with planks No 7……………these planks turned through 90 degrees at the stern……..and you can see how the extra length comes in handy for twisting and clamping down.

            Bob

Can’t wait to see how you get round that sharp curved stern end !

                  Hello Duckie

I`m pleased you`re keeping up……………..I`ll be asking questions later.

Was nice seeing you both again at Etherow today……………….lovely sunny day but the chill wind dampened our enthusiasm somewhat!

                  Bob
