I've recently started sailing, but have been interested in a long time in building my own model sailing boat for display. I'm really attracted to the early 20th century America's Cup yachts, and want to build one of these. For example, the Shamrock V:

I'm willing to take the whole project very, very slowly, as I am a complete beginner. If there are kits available, that would be great. If so, does anyone know of where I might get one? If not, I'm willing to build it from scratch, as I said, very slowly. Does anyone know where I could get plans for it?

Also, are there any books that are generally recommended for building from scratch?

Thanks very much indeed for any advice or links.

      Tom

          Hello Tom

You are a brave man to take on building a model of this classic yacht and I am looking forward to seeing your build progress photos.

A brief look on Google took me to this site **LINK** Classic Charters own the full size vessel and the site has a few very nice photos.

This site has a nice set of drawings of the full size yacht, might not be enough for a beginner as there is a lot of scaling to do but it does show that the details are out there

          All the best

            Tom,

Another suggestion is to look at Billings boats. If you Google 'Billing model boats' – you will easily find the website. They do a kit of 'America' – one of the original yachts. You can also view the PDF plan which shows all the kit details. That might help you decide whether you are happy to go for the kit versus the scratch built route.

Many thanks for your advice and encouragement. And for the various links.

I'm still trying to decide which route to go down. I've done a bit more googling, and have found that a man named Milton Thrasher provides laser cut frames for J class models, including the Shamrock V. This might be one route to go down, as I'd like to make the hull from wood. If I tried to make it from scratch, I'd need to get hold of the plans which are in a book available at the Maritime museum in Greenwich. But I think this is beyond my skill levels at the moment.

                    It's me again

Here's a shot of the deck layout

The plan is available from My Hobby Store

I actually have a pal, whose father used to work for the owner of Tetley Tea and I think his yacht was called Shamrock
