      Hi all

I am going to use a 12V gell cell battery on my new boat .can these be charged with a car battery charger .I have an old battery that i have tried it with but due to the small size of the battery it does not register on the needle. it has changed but it was really a experiment and don’t want to damage a new battery.>>as below

          Short answer, NO.

Most model shops sell appropriate chargers, localand on line. Invariably cheaper than bying a replacement battery AND the right charger.

An old battery, if it has been left untended might have deteriorated beyond the point of no return, and even if it does take a charge, it might not be a full one and may not be able to deliver it anyway.

Longer answer – only if you monitor the charge process with both an ammeter and a voltmeter. The S stands for "sealed". When an SLA is over charged it will vent. That which is vented cannot be replaced, and the sealed for life advantage now means that it is a dead battery.

This is a straightforward table. Just match the charger to the capacity and voltage of the battery.

MFA do or at least did, an SLA charger… their 2-6-12 model, for these voltages..not automatic so need to keep an ear out to disconnect JUST before bubblig takes place, or the green charger light goes out.

Ashley.. Not had much success with the single plug in types, they flash fully charged as soon as the voltage shows high enough, and not when actually fully charged (my experience)

Not particularly hi-tek, but safe since they offer a sensible maximum charge rate that is unlikely to damage the battery, at the cost of a long charge. On the other hand, fast charging lead acid is never a good idea, but thats just my opinion based on years of practice.
