      Hi all

I have two 12v 7ah jell batteries each is connected seperatly to the motors via Electronize ESC's & Action mixer. The deckhouse is not easy to remove for access to them so I have installed a charging socket in a capstan. The problem is that both batts will be connected togeather at the socket eliminating the previous separation which I am keen to keep (better chance of getting boat back if a batt fails) How can I use the single charging point without causing a parrallel/series conection. I believe that a Diode could be used but know nothing about electronics.

You can't unless you also fit a SPDT or DPDT switch so that you can select which battery you want to charge via the single charging point. The switch will only be carrying the charging current so need not be too hefty (5A would be more than enough).

Another option is to fit a second charging socket and disguise it by making it look like a ventilator (either mushroom or cowl). A bit of plastic tube of the right diameter will 'plug' in over the vertical pin inside the socket. In fact it doesn't have to be a ventilator, anything else you might find on deck would do.

Well! that answers that question. Thanks gents. I will look into both ideas and seek a suitable location for either option.

                Hi

Dave your P103 unit can be "missused" to allow charging of 2 batteries from a single scource (charger) while giving some isolation between them. Altho I would add 2 resistors to give the diodes some protection in the event of a battery being totally flat (0V) when you start to charge. The resistors would be selected to limit the current to a safe value for the diode.

It is not an ideal situation charging batteries in parallel but it can be done (with care)

                Michael

If you wish I can let you have a diagram of the requires circuit, it would need 2 diodes and 2 resistors

                cheers Tom

That all went over my head but thanks Tom. I will use the safe way via SPDT…thanks Dave.
