Can I add a bowsprit to a Star45 I’m building, which, according to the plans, doesn’t need one?

        Hi sailboat modlers,

I need the advice of someone who knows the physics of sailing fairly well. the jib boom for my yacht hits the mast, so it cant tack. I would like to know if I can add a bowsprit, because I'm not sure if this will much up the physics or not. Any advice?

        Sincerely, Samuel C.

If it s a non radio boat, you probably dont want it to tack – resetting the sails for the opposite tack will normally happen either at the shore or on shore, so the jib can be manually moved over. With a Braine steered boat there is usually some resetting to be done between legs on different tacks anyway.

Nothing to prevent fitting a bowsprit, but moving the jib forward will certainly alter the balance of effort of the sailplan. Whether this would be a good or bad thing in any particular situation is a totally open question.

            Hi Samuel.

Sounds like something is out of place. Some Photo's would help to clarify the problem.

            Cheers, Terry.

              Hi,

Thanks for the replies, I've solved the problem without adding a bowsprit, I just put the jib boom attachment right at the very front of the bow. I put in some teak in there so that is is strong enough to withstand the pressure of the stay and jib. Sorry, can't get a photo at the moment, I just put up the rigging for a test to see everything was in place, I'm still working on the hull.

              Samuel C.
