I am not convinced that one could design of ‘universal’ jig to suit everything from speedboat type hulls through to yots or tugs or subs and galleons without it being so cumbersome (and expensive) that a bespoke jig for type would be a better option..? As has been said, a jig to suit a certain style of vessel may be obtainable, but just glancing around my shed I don’t believe that I could have built very much with a universal type? Not being negative, just seems to be too wide a brief… Ashley

It Looks to me like the project could be polarizing. It is hard to see how a building jig can be universally useful so I can see bespoke jigs and perhaps a universal handing device.

The challenge is designing a jig for every shape / size (but I'm not sure about yots) I don't know about cost but just like any other kit based system I would expect the user to start off with a few basic pieces for their first build and then add to the system over time.

          Tim

I don't think the project is polarizing just yet, in fact the design is still at a very fluid stage [i.e. ripping up ideas and moving goal posts]

Yes there are a few CAD drawings floating about.

            Hi All,

I'm sure everybody knows that person who spent most of their time building the perfect workshop, but unfortunately never built a model in it 😀 I certainly know some model engineers in that category, the first to give advice but never actually built anything because they were too busy making that jig !!

                Hi Paul,

I think the Black & Decker workmate takes some beating, wish I had one 😁

Think of this jig as a workmate for models.

A 3D 'Boatmate'? You've drawn the short straw there, Doc. I use a flat board, like most of the folk who've replied. For other assemblies I make up jigs ad-hoc and keep them only if I think they might be needed again.

I really wish I could help. because I've lost sleep thinking about this for you. I've concluded that even if you could design one you'd never ever manage to compile instructions on how to use it which would be intelligible to yer average boatie – even if they bothered to read them. It would also be so expensive that only a very few would buy one. By "Expensive" I mean more than a tenner. At that price both teeth and breath tend to be sucked in.

I had to retire my Workmate 400 when we moved house last year. I'd bought it shop-soiled from House of Holland in 1976. I think I paid £11. I shed a tear…

It's not a crime to withdraw gracefully. Check what W C Fields said about it. **LINK** Would that our politicians would accept that.

BTW is "jigs" a shortened form of "jury rigs"? One for the etymologists out there.

If you are loosing sleep then you are over thinking the problem as it really is very straight forward and fairly simple.

                      Dont etymologists look at insects?

In which case – NO PROB!! I am also pretty straightforward and definitely very simple.

The current versions are not as well made as the old ones Neil, much more flimsy.

the old stuff like the one I have is made from 16 gauge steel, whereas the new stuff is made from much thinner 22 gauge steel….…..I know this from court proven fact, and a case I took to court in 2004 over injuries received from a newer workmate collapsing on me and breaking my wrist ,lower arm and 2 ribs

Yes, I've got one of the early ones and it weighs a ton. I only use it for heavy duty DIY and keep it in the garage.

I've also had one of the more lightweight ones, the Workmate 300, for many years, which I bought to use with the other one for larger items like doors and worktops etc. It is just the job for model boat building and keep it in the small bedroom/workroom.

As much light as possible but it depends where you put it. It's no use having any details in shadow so between my little bedroom workshop and the dining table I have 6 Ikea Anglepoise type lamps. These have bases that you can either clamp or screw in place.

Next time I am in Ikea I could easily be tempted to get a couple more.

Throwing another oar in, is there going to be any room for a model on your universal jig? wink

I'm thinking about using leds on flexi mounts [low voltage so no need for electrical certificates] regarding your other oar there will be room on the jig for a model [just] and you won't need a degree in engineering to understand how it works.
