            Nope!

Something more factual than that, Dave

You really need to know the GE story to know the answer

            Clue……..Note only four funnels…….Mmmmmm?

                  "Holyhead harbour from Telegraph Hill"

Only just discovered this fact!………..Will do a recce and report back

The photo suggests that the old Telegraph building is still standing and the cable connected to Ireland via the Isle of Man

                        Hi Bob,

I like the picture of Holyhead breakwater, I spent many happy hours in my youth fishing off the side of it. It is still the longest breakwater in the UK.

My parents spent their honeymoon in Soldiers Point on Holyhead island where the breakwater starts. My father used to tell me that the engineer in charge of building the breakwater committed suicide when he thought it had been built in the wrong shape and should have enclosed a bigger area. However that story is apparently untrue. There is a detailed account of building the breakwater here:- http://www.holyheadbreakwater.com/BwBuild/index.htm, which says that the Great Eastern visited the town in 1859.

                          Hello Gareth

We like this part of Holyhead too, and we often call at the Boathouse for lunch in summer

Soldiers Point is abandoned now along with two other awesome mansions, close by

                          Holyhead

GE at Holyhead………Harbour was unsuitable for some reason

Some of the crane track can still be seen today

                          Bob

I do like the clarity of your first image, it holds up very well even under magnification.

I especially like the connection between the ship and its final resting place by the way you have positioned the ship across the mouth of the river appearing to be heading at full speed to the beach where it was cut up.

Its a very poignant and evocative image.

                                Paul

Regarding Hollyhead the GE did dock there but on its first night in port a huge storm forced the Captain to take the ship out to sea where its mass helped it ride out the storm, some smaller ships were sunk.

Sorry Bob I have no idea. I live over in East Yorkshire so I dont know the chap you are referring to. Before I retired I used to visit RAF Valley 2 or 3 times a year and occasionally managed to drive around Holyhead to see what's changed but I have not been there for over three years now. Although I have now returned to work I am not likely to be visiting Valley in the near future.

Well nobody 's got the answer to the opening poser!…..Shame on you, Paul

Great Eastern's maiden voyage in 1859 was to Holyhead and she had five chimney's in those days and the photo shows only four chimney's

The chimney and boiler were removed in 1865 to make room for the Atlantic Telegraph cable
