I have been experimenting with producing my own e-books that will display on KINDLE E-READERS.

I have just completed "A Tale of two Bulkers" concerning my service in two bulk carriers in the mid 1960s and late 1970s.

The file size is 5MB. It has 65 pages and 34 images.

I would like to find someone willing to test it in a KINDLE e-reader. If anyone volunteers and sends me their e-mail address, I will send it for free.

All I would like in exchange is confirmation, or otherwise, that it is formatted correctly and all the images and text have appeared correctly. Most Kindle e-books that I have seen have been a jumble with images grouped together at the end. Mine are all in the text.

It works on my KINDLE that is the old keyboard type, but I would be intersted to hear if it is OK in other versions. It also works in Nooks and computers.

I would not like to offer free downloads indefinately, so I will limit this offer to today only in the hope that someone will help me out. So far, my appeals elsewhere have not been taken up.

          Bob,

I have the older type of Kindle so probably not much use to you. Not sure just how you download it directly anyway. All my downloads have been via Amazon.

            Colin,

It is easy enough. You right click on the document when it arrives, then left click on "copy".

Plug the Kindle into the computer with the USB connector and a Kindle Icon will appear in "my computer." Open it up. Open up "documents" & paste the copy in it!

OK Bob, send it to me then. You have my email address. Have to find the connecting lead though, I'm sure I've got it somewhere.

                Correction! Just received it.

I have just sent you one each, but not sure if they arrived OK as I can't open them in my sent box. Maybe the file was too big for e-mail. But if this is the case, I can try them with "We Transfer" that always works.

Don't seem to have the micro USB connector so I have ordered one. Should get it an a day or so.

I don.t think they got through. I will send again via "We Transfer" You will get a download link that will definitely download.

                        Colin & Gareth,

I have just sent each of you a "We Transfer" download link for the document. It is a well-tried system and Colin has already had a long file from me via the system in the past.

                          Hi Bob,

I have the file by both routes. I have had a quick look on my computer at the one you sent by email and it looks fine. I will check it on the Kindle tomorrow morning.

Received both files like Gareth. Prefer to read it on the Kindle and should get the necessary lead in a day or so.

                            Thanks,

                              Colin & Gareth,

Many thanks. Glad it got through OK. There are coloured images in it that I hope show up on the Kindle Fire (I think that is a colour version). I only got my Kindle last week. Picked it up cheap on Ebay to experiment with correct formatting. It is an old one, as it has a keyboard.

Whilst I vastly prefer proper books, I have to say that my Kindle has proved invaluable when on holiday in terms of reducing the weight of our luggage. I am a very fast reader and need at least 4 books on a week away. Usually I pre load the Kindle in advance but on our extended New Zealand trip earlier this year found myself running short of reading material and was able to download some extra books over the mobile phone network – brilliant really. NZ may be English speaking but their book prices are eye watering, paperbacks sell at what would be hardback prices back in the UK.

                                  Colin,

Gareth has just e-mailed me to say that it has all gone in fine to his more modern Kindle, even with the colour images displaying correctly. I have no doubt it will go in yours when you get the cable.

                                  Many thanks to you both!

I am afraid it is going to be another "damp squib" though.     I offered it free on several forums as a test and only had two takers –   Still, I have learned how to do it!face 1

Downloaded my copy onto my older Kindle and it looked fine with all the images in the correct place.

                                          A very interesting read.

                                            Colin,

Thanks, it should be OK in your other one as well when you get the cable.

Incidentally, if you like reading nautical (or other) e-books, when you get the cable, I can recommend you have a look at this site that has thousands of ancient books scanned in. All freely available. The following link is to the Lloyds Register pages. You can search for anything else from there:

                                            http://archive.org/search.php?query=lloyd%27s%20AND%20shipping%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts&page=1

The downloads are available in various forms, PDF, Kindle, Epub etc. I read them all the time and find I can put them in the Kindle or Nook quite easily via the USB cable.
