The big flag seems to be midships?………To clear the paravane area?

I`ve had a look and still haven`t worked out the correct flag………………might be the Union Jack after all……………….the White Ensign is for merchant ships, it seems

Would have been nice to know JDAW flew?

Come on Bob! The White Ensign is flown by commissioned warships. The Red Ensign by merchant vessels and the Blue Ensign by merchant vessels where the master holds a Royal Naval Reserve commission.

The Union Jack is normally only flown by naval vessels at the bow of the vessel while in harbour.

If your Jeannie Deans is depicted at sea on war service under the RN she would be flying the White Ensign.

                    Morning Bob

Amongst other things JD acted as a minesweeper during the war and it occurs to me that she might have flown a special signal flag at the mast head whilst she was actually in the process of minesweeping to warn other ships in the area.

Sorry but I don’t know enough about RN signal flags to confirm this thought so it might be complete hokum.

                    Paul

                      Morning Paul
I`ve seen a few minesweeper pictures and they all seem to have something on the mast……………………I think the kits pictures will show something useful?

Any progress on the Barrel Back for us to see?

Sir Lancelot has one small White Ensign behind the funnel and she`s a minesweeper too

The ship would have flown the White Ensign at sea as a matter of course so it’s probably that you are looking at.

I think, as Paul says, it is likely that a separate flag would have been hoisted when the vessel was actively involved in minesweeeping but I suspect you will not see many photos of that as any other vessel in close enough proximity to take such a picture would be using all available spare sets of eyeballs to check for mines themselves rather than faff around with a camera.

                            Well put, Colin!

Which also means………….I could fly anything I find lying about………..Who`ll notice?…….I`ll try a red pennant?

But the minute, I do……………..a rivet spotter will appear out of the woodwork!

                              Hi Bob.

If any vessel were to make a single flag hoist then it would be from the International Code of Signals [which went up to 3 flag hoists if I remember]. If this is the case the most likely is Code Flag A = I am engaged in underwater activities. Code flag A is a burgee i.e it has a swallow tail and is divided vertically into 2 colours, white and blue with blue at the hoist [I think]

                              All the best

Doing a bit of searching I have found that P over B in the International Code of Signals means “I am engaged in minesweeping operations, keep clear” illustration here:

I think that answers your question..

royal navy has its own flag codes.the flag for minesweeping i think a black flag on the yard arm.
