          Hi Chris

Sorry I can’t help you there,I bought my lifeboat already converted and all I can say is that its had the two motors taken out and one central one replaced, and a small esc and 27meg receiver fitted. It still goes quite fast with a 7.2 battery fitted and I’ve refitted the deck and filled all the holes in same as it was more like a colinder when we bought it.

Sorry could’nt be of more help.

I seem to remember that Alan Poole did an article about converting the above boat.

                      Are you there Alan??.

                      Len.

                          Hi all,

Yes I did convert the RNLI Severn class lifeboat when it was first released and did an article about it for MMI. It is the Feb 2007 issue.  The first advertisement for this model appeared in the Lifeboat Journal and I subsequently found out that the RNLI had been 2 years in developing the model with the manufactures in China. It is an accurate little model and well worth converting to a better control system. Weight is very important , and using the lightest possible equipment will pay dividends, mine is a great little regatta boat.       Always happy to help.

                          Cheers  Alan

Thank you for the help and advice, Alan, since I’m a novice, what does MMI stand for and all the conversion is in this copy?

I will set about and track one down.

                             cheers

                              Hello Chris,

MMI stands for Marine Modelling International Magazine, it is another  model boat publication by Traplet publications.

The conversion is an easy task on this model, I believe I covered most aspects of it in the article with several photos which should answer and clarify most questions.

Also as mentioned above, Dave Wilson did do a similar conversion article which appeared in the Model Boats Kit Special publication Winter 2006. The approach was slightly different but the basic ideas are  the same. You should still be able to get copies of the above magazines from the publishers, Traplet for MMI and Encanta media for the Model Boats Kit Special.

                              Regards  Alan..

                                I sailed a friend’s scratch 12th Arun…….The most fun I had sailing a surface craft.

Downside is the owner gets asked the same question from all general public who spot it from 100 yards!  WCIGO

At 12th tthe Arun had a pair of direct coupled high torque 24 fan motors drawing 5 amp.

Car fan motors at this scale.

                                          Hi Chris/ 60 watt.

Check out the Model Slipway range, they do some very reasonably priced little models that with a bit of superdetailing make superb little models.  You could also build their Trent lifeboat that makes a very nice model that is a bit bigger.  You could  go the whole hog and get a kit from Speedline at the larger scale of 1/12th, superb detailed kits but more expensive, this is the  traditional model lifeboat scale. and lastly, Don’t forget dear old David Metcalf of Metcalf Models who also does a large range of very well respected model lifeboats.

                                          Cheers  Alan..

Alan, chaps. I suppose it boils down to personal preferance.  A converted RTR is certainly handy to stuff in the boot of the car and is fairly tough and resistant to damage. Obviously not as nice as pukka kit. Do both! The RNLI boat is certainly cheap enough. Ashley

                                              Alan/Ashley,

I have just come into modelling, now i’m totally hooked, been pouring over the websites, I want everything, well… just a couple. I think I’m going down the path of converting the plastic seven so the kids can have one, then, when her ladyship thinks  I’m totally mad, get  myself a larger RNLI, why umm, I suppose they look great.

The big kid has been released..

                                                 Hi Chris

When her ladyshp thinks your totally mad present her with a boat of her own and then when she is hooked you can get yourself anything you want.

See my album for other boats my wife Velda and I have between us and she can sail all of them, but still not quite sure of yachts yet but getting there,I build ’em and she sails ’em,seems a good arrangement to me!.

The plastic Carlson tug that is sold by Howes Models is just the thing for the kids and virtually unbreakable.
