I think that you have less of a problem than you might imagine. It is fairly common in model aircraft use to want the shaft at the opposite end of the motor to how it is supplied. It is not that difficult to remove the shaft and replace it with a longer one with both ends available. You will need a collet to replace the spring clip that I expect that your motor uses and a longer shaft (a drill blank can be used) .

Just be aware that the screw that fixes the shaft to the motor bell can be very difficult to remove. Heating the allen key and patience are the answer.

There are dozens of YouTube video's on this.

      Replacing motor shaft

I have absolutely no idea how efficient it is to have a prop at both ends of the motor and a mounting in the middle. One prop is clearly going to have an effect on the other.

        Cheers Chris. Drill blanks…like it.

As it happens component shop have so 1850Kv motors which should be ok.

Re efficiency. No doubt you are right but a feature of the drive unit is that arrangement so that what I want to try and achieve. Ideally I would like an edf fan on the front, that would be good.

        sent you an email

ps…Fabulous picture of Colin’s paddler on the next front cover!

Ok. 1820Kv motors in hand, shaft one end, screw on prop adaptor the other.

ordered 2 sets of 5 x 4.5 three blade props (cw and ccw). Hoping to be able to use a 5 inch prop at the rear and a cut down one upfront. Had planned to use an edf fan up front but this would be too much of a ‘frust mismatch.

off to the IOW on Monday 17th staying at the ‘Wight bay’ hotel (I think), in Sandown, returning the following Tuesday. Several pubs have model boats in them wot I will make an effort to check out. Berengar is on a Paleo course thurs-mon so I will(sob sob) be “on my own” for these days, meeting up for tea time. There is an ASLAN overtime strike Monday to weds…I hope it does not delay our journey down.

Hi, with thanks to Ashley and Ricky I got Ark Royal on the water at Bushy yesterday for a test run!

After the collection of lead, old brake callipers and assorted scrap was in, it sat nicely in the water and went well with plenty of speed, a nice bit of inertia and no discernible roll when turning.

            img-20230716-wa0003.jpg

Now I have weighed all the ballast, it was displacing a total of 52kg.

I have swapped all the props round so it will drive forward with outward turning shafts (which is what I intended), not sure how I cocked that one up.

Going to make sup some proper removable weights from lead now, and then I think another test once I've done that. Then on to the task of cutting the boat deck openings, which I am not relishing.

Ashley the Spyglass Inn on the end of the beach at Ventnor has a good collection of curios in it so make sure you check that one out. Nice spot for a drink regardless!

Bit too windy at the pond this morning, just Richard (Dying Full and Woody) and me (Tup) plus a couple of young ones with the cheap ready to runs.

The local terrapin showed up for a bask in what sun there was.

              Gave up early.

Noel, the carrier looks magnificent! What a brave man you are to embark on such a huge project. Nice photo! with lots of potential dinners in the bakground too.

Noel is going to make a great job of the carrier, it will look wonderful filled with Phantoms and Buccaneers and a destroyer escort.

Despite the length is was remarkably manouveable, not that I had any doubts, as the Diamond also turns very well despite the length.

Back from abroad, and come home to a split 120 litre fishy tank! Fortuitously an even bigger one has been obtained free, but there’s a lot of work and setting up to do with these things.

New 5 x 4.5 three blade white bullnose props have arrived, so I have everything I need to crack on with “the flying bus” (name to be decided, as the proposed boat wasn’t called anything (circa 1935).

Mulling over the best way of glueing very thin ply together and keeping it twist free (although not an issue for our Tups)…I may use styrofoam for the bulkheads as it’s very stiff for the weight.

good last Sunday at Bushy Park boating pond near the free car park use Hampton Court entrance.

                    Bit breezy.

Having issues getting my head around latest build in 3D. It’s going to be very light, made with 0.8mm ply mostly, and flat-ish with it. Trouble is the bottom has a step in it, and this is an issue insofar as I need to keep the body pinned down to keep it square and twist free. There are several ways of achieving this, it is a matter of picking the best one! In any event I can feel a jig coming on. A few squares of ex-cupboard chipboard held onto the ex-kitchen worktop building table may be the way to go.

I have the two base pieces, and I need to now cut two identical sides whereupon when I offer them up to the base I will see how to proceed.

Not necessarily a strictly boating matter, but…

The data on my old PC was backed up on memory sticks and a 500Gb portable hard drive, and when I finally had to bin it and use a laptop I had no loss of data or indeed any problems putting all the stuff I needed on to the new (my sons old) laptop. Portable disc drives are quite speedy, and noticeably quicker in getting stuff on or off them than sticks (perhaps not so much with new high speed ones).

However, they do have a shelf life and although if they die specialists can break out the disc on recover data, this is more expensive than simply buying a new drive from time to time, and I saw a figure of 10 years once mentioned.

Bearing this in mind, I kept the old receipt and wrote the date on it ..2011..and recently thought it was time for an insurance purchase to forestall any issues. Not total loss of course, as I have the data on usb sticks, but just the hassle.

Solid state hard drives are now available at reasonable prices, having been the expensive option for a while, and I have splashed out 60 beer vouchers on a whopping 1Tb (Terra bit,) SSD portable hard drive.

The new drive is very small (about 4usb sticks sellotaped together) and having no moving parts SHoULD last a long time. Obviously I will keep the old one and no doubt that will last a long time as well, however it’s good insurance. Your life nowadays seems to be all digital so it makes sense to have adequate back ups for everything. Family photos, pictures off phones, model boat articles..scans of important documents..wills, whatever. Everything in one place and if you can pop it in a small fireproof safe, jobs a good’un.

Yeah, my photographs take up a lot of space so I've got a couple of 4TB drives for backup and have recently added a solid state one which I shall give to one of my son's to look after.

Two 4tb drives !, that’s a lorra pictures! My how things have come on. I purchased, for My first toe-in-the-water digital camera (an impressive 1.3Mb!) that cost £99…a 512Mb sd card and that was not cheap can’t remember exactly how much, but certainly in the 25-40 quid bracket, over 40 years ago. One of our then friends had a Sony compact…..at a monster 3.2Mb ….all singing and dancing (so I thought) that cost well over £300.

Compared to my little cannon compact (£99, 20Mp) with a 4Mb or 8Mb card or something in it (tenner or so).

The Egham Royal show is approaching on the bank hol week end, 26/27th Aug. There will be a very large marquee tent for the model boat section and an outdoor pool. Obviously there will be other stuff there and assorted goings on.

HOWEVER it looks like yours truly will be there on his own, as the other Bushy chaps have had “stuff” come up. It is of course an opportunity to pack the car with boats and things, and I am quite capable of filling three tables easily with interesting stuff, one of the beauties of having everything boxed up and a little car like a Tardis inside (Suzuki Ignis) .

If anyone would like to join me please get in touch, even if it’s only for one day.

Yeah, one of my cameras produces a file size for each photo of around 20mb and the other around 30mb as I shoot in RAW so storage space gets eaten up at a rate of knots!

You can get arrested for shooting in the raw…

Wired up a y-lead to power the two esc in the new boat but got the brown and blue mixed up on the esc connectors. Couldn’t be bothered to resign them but it doesn’t matter as the shrink wrap bits are the right way round (red black). Incorporated a fuse in this, blade connectors and a blade fuse, easy, and gummed up the ends of the aircraft esc with silicone sealant to waterproof them. Due to the design it shouldn’t get any water in it, but it keeps the yellow smoke at bay.

Rear props sit on pylons, essentially the same as the bumper motor mount but non rotating and on top. The tube sits in styrofoam and having stuck them in they are remarkably rigid.

i need some builders insulation foam now, just a bit, to stick on top in order to give the top a bit of shape. Now I want some of course, all the blinking skips have disappeared from the road…

Thanks Peter, filed away for future reference AS young Trevor has some and I have appropriated a lump.

I have trimmed it up and it looks as if it will be ok. The first slice at 25mm did not bend, it just broke but the approx 18mm sections seem to be bending around the top of the boat ok, will have to take it easy.

It is less coarse than I thought and I reckon I will be able to get a nice smooth finish after a coat of epoxy resin.

Whilst at Trevor’s we had a quick “power chat” on our respective new projects and I must say that a free frank exchange of sometimes some blatantly implausible views certainly pays off sometimes.

i took away two almost definite actions for mine. One was the skeg construction, needed for the look mostly, but as we discussed various ways of doing the skeg, one stood out as being both easy and robust, and the second point pertains to the strip of windows along the side. These differ in the various references I have and have people behind them. Ultimately however unrealistic it is, I will go with the period illustration as that’s what the boat needs to look like, but I had a simply fantastic idea for the people and the actual window production that involves a camera and vinyl printing.

It’s impossible sometimes to think of everything when making a model, and one of the discussions we had was…one (air) rudder or two? The boat is wide, wider than seems plausible to be honest, but for various reasons it has to be wide.

The illustration and model appear to show just one rudder…but with two props…that’s just silly, eh?

SO…having made two rudders and having offered them up to the boat we make the unfortunate discovery that the propellor sweep completely blocks any sort of ‘view’ of the rear fin in regard to running a servo rod to said items. No matter how I looked at it, I was thwarted.

SO…re-examining the case for a single rudder, and there is a good case for just one, it suddenly became the way out. The rod for a central rudder would run in the sort of triangular gap underneath the two props (they are very close to the top skin).

By the look of the ‘builders model’ (although it is just that and not a working model) the undercut hull portion behind the planing step APPEARS to morph nicely into the rudder, but this would give a pointed stern, not good for planing and the blurb says the boat has width for stability.

As usual, whatever I will do will be right, as no one will be able to prove otherwise…..

Most of these cover craft are red. I am calling these two red, morphing to a fairly vivid orange on top (due to sunlight catching the top surface).

They are red presumably to make the biggest impact on the front cover, but Trev is going to go for a wood/cream finish on his or at least that’s current thinking, while I am sticking to red. Orange was suggested but what boats are painted orange? Besides bits of lifeboats and life raft canisters obv. and also it would then look like a Bond Bug.

It is unfortunate that red is the one colour that is difficult to photograph, for some obscure technical reason, and indeed I had to take loads of pictures of my Red Seagull in order to get a few reasonable ones.

I will be using rattle cans, and have chosen a red colour (can’t remember what, sitting on the sofa) and may consider trying to fade into an orange on top however that will be tricky. In theory on a nice day the side will be darker than the top assuming the light is not dead behind you. The only oranges available were all ‘boy racers’ bright oranges, and the Ford ‘red orange’ was just red. I Do have a proper spray outfit and I suppose I could buy a better orange but it’s a lot of faff.

Triumph Pimento is a red that looks quite 'orangey' in the sun. Think 1970's Triumph Spitfire.

Cheers Ray. We see how it goes. It’s basically Tup shape so should go ok. My mistake, 1936 vintage.

The only issue may be the odd double prop propulsion, and getting enough power from it. I have two 5×4.5 props, plus the two on the front cut down to approx 70mm diameter and both sets need to be in shrouds. The motors will be boxed in and thus interfering certainly with the front set. We will see.

Trevors is more ambitious and needless to say there are more variables to contend with.

Unfortunately these things could be built twice the size and this would improve the weight/volume ratio and also make them more buoyant and so on, however, they get too big, and it’s difficult to store them etc. The flying bus is very light at the moment, being 0.8mm ply andstyrofoam only.

                                                      Ashley
