        Hi Guys,

I am new to 2.4 R/C have just bought a Hobby King HK-T6A-M16ch unit.

I have servos from an old FM set , SANWA SRM102RDC apollo5, can these be used with the 2.4 set?

Plus I have two types of ESC's. 1a Turborix 25amp brushed unit, and a 10amp brushed 4.8 to 8.4 input ,signal is PPMdriver freq 2ghz what oneshould I use with two 24volt brushed 7watt motors running on a 12 volt SLR battery,

And last of all can I still buy a SANWA FM 36mgz receiver as I have blown up mine when I plugged in the 10amp ESC.This R/C I have only just been given it as a gift!!!

I last used a Hitec R/C unit some 24years ago.so I have a lot of catching up to do.

        Cheers,

        Hutch.

          Hi Hutch

In cases like this it is best to look at the instruction manual to check that equipment is compatible, sorry to be a damp squib but when mixing such delicate equipment the first port of call should always be the manufacturer.

            Hi Hutch

I might be wrong, and I am sure I will be corrected if I am, but servos I think are universal. I use a Hitec servo, from a Hitec Ranger, with my Planet T5 without any trouble.

ESCs though are a bit more difficult. I think it comes down to the amp draw from the battery and motor combination. So if the draw is lass than 10 amp than a 10 amp ESC is good enough. If over then a 15 amp, but not if it is more than 15 amps. If that makes sense.

There are some very experienced electronic wizards around here, so you may get a better answer.

              Hi Pau, Andy

Thanks Guys when i get the 2.4 set in my hot little hands i will look into the do and dont's.

I have found out that the Sanwa servo wiring at the plug is from left to right red, black, blue but the Hitec wiring is white ,red ,black ! But the esc wiring is black ,red, white.! very confusing.

              Cheers,

              Hutch.

You may find that older servos are not altogether compatible with 2.4Ghz gear but it's really a case of suck it and see.

Thinking about it I wouldn't really advise using old gear with new equipment. Modern servos are pretty cheap and speed controllers are not expensive either. I'm told that Sanwa kit had reversed polarity to other makes which is a good way to fry your components!

                    Hi Colin,

Funny you should say that as I tried a mini servo with the Sanwa R/Csome time ago and it did blow up, should have known something was not right, but I went ahead later and plugged a ESC into the receiver and ,guess what ,yes as I have said before the receiver melted .I will start afresh and buy new servos.

Thank you for your help .

It seems that the boating mob here in Adelaide, South Australia belong to clubs and i am not to happy with the idea as one is into sailing only and the other one is into 72 scale war ships mind you I could be wrong about that, have not been able to meet up with any club members as yet to find out.

xmas time is a bit busy for most of us, will try next year.

                    regards,

                    Hutch.

Old Sanwa did have the power leads in a different order, for some reason that they thought was clever at the time. Plugging a Sanwa servo from back then into somebody elses RX would probably cause power to be flattened (with a little luck) the servo might live through it. Somebody elses servo into a Sanwa RX would do the same, survival of the item getting reversed voltage a matter of luck. Plugging a BEC ESC into a Sanwa RX of that era would almost certainly present the RX power connections with a reversed polarity and plenty of power. This is NOT GOOD, as noted.

                        Hi Malcolm,

thank you for your thoughts as i found out to my cost!

The only problem I have now is what servo to buy as there are so many to chose from{ its very confusing} on the Hobby King website. We have a local warehouse in Sydney only 1500 km from Adelaide.

Is there such a thing as a standard size servo? my boat is 1.6 meters long and weights approx 11kilos so I thing servos about the same size as the Sanwa type would be the way to go.

                        cheers,

                        Hutch

A Futaba 3003 is about as standard as you can get, Hutch. Size is generally 40mm x 20mm x 40mm – or thereabouts.

Hobby King standard servos fall into the 31g t0 49g range, their own brand are quite good for the money too, you can even get a waterproof one for $4 US. As above measure 40 x 20 x 36mm approx

I am waiting on a back order for a battery charger. so I will order some servos when the charger is back in stock.
