I started building model boats in august, I did not have a clue what I was doing but I managed to more or less scratch build a sea commander, I am now building a 46 inch huntsman, my question is where can I buy prefabricated planked decking or will I have to plank all the deck myself, I just thought I would save time. next question where can I get a remote system to switch the power on and off once the boat is in the water, it would save my old knees.

      regards

            Greetings Colin

Thank you for your tip regarding prefabricated decking however being a sucker for punishment I have decided to use strips of mahogany for the decking, as I have said previously I am a complete novice , so can anyone out there suggest a suitable glue to use. any suggestions would be welcome.

            regards

If you are sticking wood to wood then an aliphatic glue is the best bet. I would use Super Phatic from Deluxe Materials **LINK** as it is the nearest thing to a woodworking equivalent to superglue and has the benefit of water cleanup with a damp cloth.

You will need to simulate the caulking between the planks. Two options for this are to lay black cotton thread between the planks or simply run an indelible marker pen down the plank edges before gluing them into place. Try a test piece first, However, mahogany decking is a bit unusual as the normal practice would be to use teak which can be reproduced in model form using lime planking but obviously the choice is up to you.

Hi Bryan, I'm probably a bit late now but as you are clearly a subscriber perhaps a look back at the article 'Messing about with boats' July 2013 might give you some ideas. It clearly shows exactly how a Fairy Huntsman was planked using pre-laminated decking. Hope this helps……………..Cheers…..

                  Hi Bryan.

I am also probably late, but for what is worth. I use mahogany strips for decking as well. I don't use any glue, as I find it messy. I used double face self adhesive tape (the one used for carpets). Very strong and very simple to use. I cut all the pieces to the lengths/shape I want and I then cut a strip of the self adhesive tape (width is around 2&quot. I then stick the decking strips on that leaving a gap of a couple of mm between them. I then cut each piece and remove any excess tape. So I now have all my pieces ready. I pill off the protective back of the self adhesive tape and place it on the deck. If you want I can sent you a photo. I am in the process of uploading some photos in the next couple of days.

                  Cheers

                    Greetings Davos

Thank you for the tip about using double sided tape for securing the decking on the boat. A photo of deck would be most welcome.

                    Regards

                    Bryan
