      Hi Guys..

I would appreciate some advice. I have resurrected a 46ins Huntsman from the loft of my childhood home after my Father passed awayearlier this year. I first made it at the school model club as a lad in the mid 70's and it was fitted with a Merco 60 engine.

Its in surprisingly good condition as it was stored in a sealed box, The engine and RC components similar.

However I want to re-paint and re-fit it with Electrical power plant and new RC gear but things have moved on so much in the last 40 years I haven't a clue where to begin.

Can anyone recommend a good book which will explain the current terminology ( excuse the pun) and/or give me some pointers on what I will need to start the propulsion and control fit out from scratch for this model.

      Thanks in advance.

          Hello Mike

When I restore model of this age the first thing that I check is the condition of the glue used to stick the timber parts together, in the mid 70s a popular glue was a powder/water mix called Cascamite which over the years can deteriorate to a point where it will fail when placed under stress.

Try holding the model at the bow and stern and gently flexing the entire structure to see if any joints fail.

It will be a lot easier to lend assistance if we could see some photos of the model.

            Thanks for your reply Paul.

Yes the model was built with cascamite the old urea formaldehyde powder formula. I was told it was made from rabbits, don't know if that's true but certainly smelled like it! …..Which is in fact still available and sold as something called polymite !

I have checked the substructure and it seems fine but I have also reinforced the hull by using small countersunk stainless screws through the plywood skin into the bulkheads and filled them with epoxy filler just to be on the safe side. The deck laminate was coming away so I pulled it up and re glued it, patched it and recovered it.

The superstructure I have rebuilt completely with dare I say it one or two modifications for the better and reinforced this also with small stainless screws.

I am confident the structure of the boat is fine but what concerns me is the specification of the electric power plant, battery, esc, receiver, servos, transmitter etc. which I should be installing.

Particularly the Motor, ESC and Battery to replace the old Merco. Its been 38 years since the Merco was last fired up and I haven't got a clue where to start or what the terminology is or power outputs, run times etc. etc.

I see we even have a new term for revs per minute now called KV…that much I do understand but I'm very much in the dark about the rest and wouldn't know a brushless motor from a brushed one or Lead acid from a Lipo.

I will take a few snaps at the weekend and post them up.

            Cheers

              Hi Mike

I am also a lad from the 70s and when it comes to motive power I am something of a petrol head and the electric stuff is mainly mumbo jumbo and tends to give me a headache.

So I like to keep things simple and whilst expecting to be shot down in flames by the tech experts I would fit something along the lines of an MFA 800 with some good old NiCads and an ACtion speed controller.

For radio I would personally use an old 27 set as I have a few lying around but you can buy one of the new fangled 2.4 digital sets for about £40.

I hope this helps you but I do expect it to raise some comments from my more educated colleagues.

              Paul

Many thanks to you both…that's an excellent link and extremely helpful. I am going to go down the route of a single brushed motor relatively inexpensive and invest the money in a decent ESC and battery pack. I will post some picture up before and after.

                  Thanks again
