Well this device needs a really good name ? How about calling it a "Brexjig" then we can blame it for everything!!

You are putting the cart before the horse as I'm a long way from patenting the thing never mind naming it, but as you have started the ball rolling you might as well know that its working title is Model Mate, this won't be its final name as Googling Model Mate could throw up all sorts of unsavoury web-sites [no I haven't tried] so as well as ideas I am also open to suggestions for a title.

Sir Paul Thomason? Or are you aiming a bit higher?

I keep having a think about this on and off and one of the biggest problems for me is how you're going to hold/support/clamp the bow and stern of a skinned/completed model so that you can rotate it to work on, complicated by the fact that the centre-point of rotation at each end needs to be in exactly the same place.

One other thought I've had, which doesn't help this project, is to have a frame with straps/webbing (similar to a model stand) so that the boat can be supported/lain on the straps and rotated as necessary, though on its sides it wouldn't be very stable and not much force could be applied e.g. sanding – more to help with painting and fitting small items. At least this method wouldn't hinder access to the area you'd want to work on.

                Hi Colin

The only title worth getting is Editor [and I stand no chance] sad

                Chris

This is the horizontal Y axis problem that we discussed a couple of pages ago and I'm happy to report that I have overcome the problem of holding the model [any size / shape] firmly in place whilst it rotates around the Y axis.

                    Hi Chris

You are 100% correct about the horizontal axis being the key to the whole project.

The vertical axis with its movable clamps and grips is straightforward (as can be seen from the numerous jigs that are currently available) the sticking point to a fully universal jig has always been the challenge of rotating any size / shape of model around the horizontal axis.

The solution to this problem is actually fairly simple and is resolved by thinking in three dimensions, as a teaser I will say that all of the component parts of the universal jig are 'off the shelf items' and could be assembled by a nine year old.

                    Dear All

The prototype works but DM will understand when I say that it is over engineered and far to complicated so now I have to iron out the kinks and simplify the entire thing.

Yes the ironing is complete and I am now at prototype 2 stage where I polish up the drawings ready for CNC work.

Its a long process but I have to get everything right as I am up against a very particular person who will only accept the best.

                                        Hi Ray

Building a boat isn't a worry as the biggest problem is choosing the right kind of boat to build because no matter which type I choose some bright spark will say 'Ah yes but you couldn't build such and such'
