Because the cooling system is so long I will be using a pump, the pick up will be close to the prop and the exit via the exhaust pipes.

        Hello Paul

That means more weight in the boat……….but  I suppose, that means less ballast too!

The Slo Mo kit has arrived and on measuring the widest former….my model would be 22″ wide!……………and can fore-see motor sourcing problems now!

        Need a think……………hmmmmmmmmmm…..zzzzzzzz

          Morning Bob

If you are still going to use the kit as a template for your own version then you can make the model big enough to suit your motor of choice.
Failing that keep the kit build as light as you can and fit one of those fast buggy motors that the RC car guys use.
The problem with water cooling in a hydroplane is where to position the pickup as when the model is going at full speed most of the hull is out of the water.
How about using a lightweight computer CPU fan and air cooling the motor, this has the added advantage of being able to pass cooling air over the ESC and battery pack.

Just for reference, how wide is your hull?

Where did you get your veneer from please……………..and what is the cost etc?

Also, the type of glue you used, please

                    Hi Bob

I got my wood from a merchant in Altrincham I bought up all their old stock of unglued veneer but they didnt have enough so I cut some of my own on the bench saw.
                    The veneer cost £65.
For glue I used a trade twin pack epoxy but any twin pack will do, that Gorilla glue is supposed to be very good.

Very nice but dam expensive for a clutch and a 1 to 1 splitter with no reverse, I can see why the Zenoah boys would use it.

I`ve got mahogany in stock and thinking about making my own veneer………..How thick was your veneer?

I think 1mm is possible at my end?

I used a new veneer blade in my bench saw and cut to 1mm (saved the sawdust to use as filler)

How thick was your veneer?……..Mine is 0.022″ and seems very thin……not much scope for much sanding!

I used 1mm thick mahogany cut with a very fine blade on my bench saw.

There is very limited scope for sanding….the trick here is not to sand until after the first two coats of varnish have been applied and then only use a very fine grade paper.

1mm?…………..That`s like a plank of wood compared to my 0.022″ stuff!

I`ve got the process mastered now, with the weighted string idea and slowly irradicating the bubbles and dry areas

Hi ya paul really pleased to see you were in sufficiently good enough health to finally give the Barrell back an outing, even more pleased that you got the ic engine in it and that it went so well. I will look forward with some anticipation to some photo’s and maybe even a video of it in action. No rush though remember the doctor knows best!!!

A digital camcorder eh Paul I got mine two years ago and still haven’t mastered the fine art of editing witness the two offerings on my Homewood Landing thread which in case you’ve been unable to follow is coming on nicely. the videos where taken on board and to be honest this is something you need a really steady stable boat for especially if you only got the camera recently

Paul. Fantastic…how about, in lieu of “action” pictures, a few of the finished article…engine installation etc ???

There are two aspects to videoing your P&J on the water, one is mastery of the device, and the second is “technique and camera direction”.

I have a few clips of some of my boats and I look at them and think –could do better.

The models are either in too much close up, so you dont get the overall impression of them on the lake, or too far away, mingling with ducks and looking less than impressive.

The other thing is….the bod (small boy) driving your boat while you do the videoing never does with it what you would like, and conversely the other way round. You can temper this with taking hours of footage and editing it I suppose, assuming, unlike myself, you are that clever.

This sort of thing could do with an article in MB magazine really.. after all, whats the point in spending all that time and effort on a boat to then only take mediocre pictures/video of it?

“Article on how to make your boat look GOOD on the water via pictures/video capture”  or similar?

All good points Ashley esp the idea of an article. When it comes to editing I’ve found, provided you’ve recorded in a format it can recognise, that windows movie maker is quite usable with facilities to cut sections out add a soundtrack even dub a comentry onto the film. It’s main drawback in my experience is it’s frighteningly slow speed. once the editing is done it can take best part of 45min to save a 20min film  methinks the answer is a faster pc
