      Work in progress picture………For G.I.A.

Have fitted a couple of formers in the stern to control the 4mm planking

And checking the general shape before planking starts in earnest

        Hi Bob

Progress looks good, have you thought about the rudder position ? you may have an location & access problem if you want your tiller/quadrant below the deck.

        Regards Ray

Thank you, Ray, for your timely cautionary advice

Don't think there's a problem……All the top wood will be removed after planking and I can then drill down or up?

Clamping tapered planks at the prow is normally a tricky job

This time I`ve decided to make a device………Fit for purpose!

            It`s a bit OTT I know, but I think I`ve cracked it?

Some photos of SM stern bits maybe some help, the mahogany brightwork from Mantua Models 1.5mm sheet, the Caldercraft stancions are the most expensive part of the boat. 13amp plug pin my favourite type of tiller arm

                Nicely built

The warm colours look nice too

Are you building anything at the moment?

                  Hi Bob

Yes always building something, currently building MTB 71 at 1/24th scale which I first saw afloat 20 years ago at Portsmouth and one of the guys there gave my a copy of the Vospers drawing, now she is at Duxford in preservation. First time I've fitted transom hung double rudders, I hope they work well with the twin screws. I allegedly build for my Grandsons but really for me

                    Nice build Ray

What about the rest of it?

Looks a nice quality build too

                    Bob

BTW……..Saw one of your Vic Smeed model aero`s on the net, the other day

It was a high wing cabin model

                      Thanks Bob

I enjoy a bit of variety, photos of some of my other projects in my album. Starting a scratch built HMS Belfast in the autumn, but I recall saying that last year ! I have kits for Tony Nijhuis electric Vulcan & Ducted fan Hawk waiting for some attention, Fairly keen on model sailing barge racing with AMBO boys at the moment and need to mould a GRP wing keel for my Veronica to make her go faster, so plenty to do Yes I enlarged Vic's Mamsell to 52" span and had it published in RCM&E 2003 it was originally a free plan in Aeromodeller in 1955 the year was born.

                      Regards Ray

WIP for GIA, and PT…….Both of you…….Get well soon

Had an all day wrestle sorting out the 1st pair of planks…….It may look a pain in the butt, but I find it quite interesting sorting out the tricky areas……..Believe it or not?

As you can see……You can`t have too many clamps on a job like this

The Heath Robinson prow clamp has saved the day and is much admired by a few of our forum members

Progress will be rather slow from now on……..Waiting for the glue to dry

In fact, at half time during the Man United v Everton match. I dashed upstairs, did the biz with plank number 4 and came down again, just in time for the start of the 2nd half!

                            Work in progress report

Finding it a bit awkward now, planking this way up, so it`s time to turn over for better access

Planking with 4mm wood is having it`s challenges, it doesn`t like the tail end bend

                                Hello Ian

I don`t soak or steam planks these days

I get away with it, because the wood is so green these days from the local wood shop

I went for a few more planks today……And some of the wood felt wet through, as though the roof was leaking!

That`s better………"Let the dog see the rabbit!"……….( Old Northern term )

It`s nice having the clamps handy, when planking up

I`ve found the Workmate very handy for the build

I`m pleased that the Vee Clamp can still be used

Got two planks under minor flex over night

Might give a splash, for good measure

                                      Hi Bob

This stage is really the best part of boat building seeing the hull developing you may consider some doublers both sides of the rear keel worth while to increase your plank gluing area ? What adhesive are you using ? I'm a convert to Gorilla glue.

                                        Hello Ray

Do you mean the rear curved edge of the keel?

It could be a problem area, when fully planked……..Hence, no access for sealing?

Will take that on board……..Thanks for your comments

                                        Bob

It will also beef up the rudder tube area too

                                          Hi Bob

Yes I'd still be thinking block hollowed out for that rear section to achieve some nice compound curves as Vic' little original, or saw cuts across th back your planks to help them go round the bend a little easier.

                                            Hark at me!

Forgot, we are having twin props, so the keel won't need the rudder hole drilling after all!

Thinking of having one 850 motor with timing belt drives to the twin props

Should look interesting?……I like to see belt drives and pulley's whizzing about

Just another work in progress picture

Due to lack of clamps and trickiness at each Pointy McPointy end, we can only handle one Plank McPlank at a time now……….That was a bit silly, but bang up to date!

The rear plank is being finally glued in position and the near plank is wetted (Thanks Ian) for bending overnight

This wetting method really does work

I like the planking jig arrangement, and the Workmate is extremely useful. I use mine all the time and it's looking nearly as worn as I do.laugh

It's nice hearing from you again

The jig was a good idea at the time, but I've resorted to one plank at a time now, so that I can get a grip on the extreme ends of the planks to maintain the tight curve

ie…..The ends now overlap at the points
