These days Paul has no hair and WD40 for his knee joints.

Couldn't run to buying a Ford GT but I did have a blue and white 105E "Z-Back" Anglia, just like the one in the Harry Potter films. Why does its number (EVO781C) still stick in my mind after 43 years? I'm sure I have better things to do with those dedicated neurons…

WD 40…..I wish, lard is all that I can afford.

BYS 848B was my Dads Mk1 Ford Cortina and CBU 273C was my Mk4 Sunbeam Rapier and yet I cant remember the reg of my new car.

Too clever by half, Mattias. Shame it wasn't EVO871C – that would have looked even more like Evostic.
Sorry for wandering so far off-topic. I shall go and solder up 20 speed controllers as penance…

DM. There is no specific topic on todays boating !.

I sold my 105e Anglia number plate (948 NPJ) for £400….. I sold the car for 50.

I would have loved a Sunbeam Rapier.

IF I MAKE a Hobbies Hydroplane I think I would paint it to tie in with another project, a matching pair so to speak. No secret, it is red and white, basically, or the other way round depending on which portion you think has the most of one colour. There is also some black in there and a bit of varnished wood.

I enjoyed painting the Terrapin. A nice drop of green, all over.

Today have received the copies of the Hobbies Hydro plans from Ian and thanks very much for that.
Yes they look like a fretwork excercise, and necessarily so due to the low power of the motor and home-made prop. 6oz it says for the hull and 6 oz for the battery. so about 300gm in total. That is a seriously light structure, and it achieves this by being made from balsa and covered in parchment paper.

That will be a hard figure to match when scaled up 2x and some really really clever person could advise me as to the likely weight if I were to make it twice-size, but consider that even with a small 28mm brushless motor in I will probably have about 3000% more power at my disposal! (gosh I happen to have a 1380Kv motor spare in the box) How powerful was the original electrorotor motor on 6v of dry battery power? a couple of watts at the most??…

Colours in the plan suggest a white deck, red cabin. black sides and red underwater. Don't like the black, I think cream, white and red/maroon would look nice.

I have also taken delivery of a parcel from Howes, several ESC, rx and so on and have outfitted my original (very first boat I made for the LAD on my return to boating, and "featured" as a readers wife letter with two pics…2004 ish) LCM and also the Midge. I have added a magnetic hold-down for the Midge superstructure, what there is of it. After all these years it has not actually blown off, but there is always a first time.. It has a speed 400 motor in it, I have a JP480 in the box….hmmm….

Tomorrow….Oberon, Midge, lcm68…possibly proj No3 if it is calm and sunny..

As I remember, those electrorotor motors were so inefficient that they stopped making them for lack of sales. I think there was a piece about them in a recent MB. If you're going to use brushless – and you may well have to because of the small size – then go for a smaller one like a 'bell' motor. Either that or send for some of Harry Smith's Larikin Tablets and book a trip to the lake district for the testing.

Don't worry about the weight – use liteply or balsa as appropriate and lightweight glasscloth to cover it and all should be well. Theoretically if you double the size of a 3D object then you increase the weight by a factor of 8, so 6oz becomes 48oz. Now you see what a lot of old tosh "conventional rules" can be!

Today could not believe it but the jetty end of the pond was solid with duckweed, and it went all down the stream as well. The pond was fully clear last week…where did it come from??

Trevor arrived just as we were going home, so we braved a test of his DDR (disastrous dinghy racer) and this went well. OR at least aspects of it were good, but some others left something to be desired. He went away with a plan of mods which should assist greatly……possibly.

I plopped the old original LCM in the water and this went well enough but when pulled out had a lot of water under the tank deck. Looks like the ramp has split on the glue-line at one side just sufficient to let in water!! Not a problem to fix, crack may have been exacerbated by sitting on the shelf for at least two years..

DM. Yes I am not worried about the weight, it will be as light or lighter than some of the similar sized things I have made especially at a larger scale. The original size and weight boat would require the calmest of conditions and mean that it would only be able to be used twice a year.

Brushless certainly, as the prop grows in size (with a larger boat) sufficiently to warrant at least a 540 motor which would be VERY heavy at the top of that tower. I have some large very low pitch air-props that would be just the job.

                        Hi Ashley

To cut down the weight look at a 28mm brushless as the 35mm ones use 10 to 14" props!!!

Harry. Yes I happen to have a spare 28mm motor and it certainly will power a reasonable size prop.

Having purchased a job lot of bits from a well known model suppliers I find that I have only two boats not fully outfitted and needing parts rather that the half a dozen I thought I had!

Having second thoughts regarding Hydro for a good number of reasons. May put on back burner as something else has turned up, partly this is due to a contra-rotating motor I have seen and the possibilities for this are…well, exciting….

Knocking something else up at the moment, and horror of horrors I have to but a bit of ply! How can this be? how have I allowed my stock of wood to get so low?

Just out of interest, while I was thinking about motor/prop matches, I tried a "standard" (probably an MFA 540, not the low power one) with a 7 inch prop and I saw 5A for a 7×3 prop and 7.5A for a 7×5 prop, both very reasonable current draws, not excessive, good amount of thrust felt with motor (tightly gripped) in hand.

ESPECIALLY as it is grey and piddling down with rain here. I sense a spell in the shed coming on, cutting stuff up wi` me small bandsaw. I may even treat myself to cutting up a bit of man-made board.

There is the LCM68 to fix the leak on, and as it appears to be where the ramp has been glued on (seams loose no doubt after all the bashing it has had) I think the likely cure is going to be….scrape off the old glue. run superglue in the crack, fill (if required) and re-paint, or at least, touch up with household light grey undercoat..

Anyone who wants to pop round for a cup of tea and a natter , view the projects (no photos allowed) and so on, just shout.

Project no6 is under way now. The new look shed has been christened with untidy mess and sawdust.

I have several things to sort out on this project that currently do not make sense but I am casting my net widely for input. Hooray for brushless motors is all I can say.

I have nipped down the road to buy some cheap superglue. It seems the best way to me, as superglue does not last in storage, and unless you have a specific application, cheap superglue glues as well as anything else.

It never fails to amaze me just how important it is to see some things in the flesh (no smutty jokes please) rather than conceptualising them on paper.A couple of issues on the next project have been solved now I have made sufficient parts to see what is involved.

As I have said before, I would not show anyone the plans from which I make anything as I would be embarrassed to show them and have the effrontery to call the, plans. Sketches is more like it, and the details are usually in my head, or I simply use pictures.

The current proj calls for some unusual material to be used and for the life of me I could not see how this would work, but it appears it WILL work, and my substitute material ALSO works well.

There is a motor dilemma looming and this will only be solved by water-trials, luckily I have space to trail various types of motor.

Not touched the lander yet. must do asap.

You would be surprised at the amount of rough sketches that have been used in the re-construction of some iconic buildings in Liverpool, at one point we ran out of fag packets.

Don't be ashamed of anything you produce……..if a scrappy drawing does the job for you then its better than any fancy CAD system.

Re unusual materials are we to assume that you have abandoned hardboard in favour of carbon fibre?

Abandoned man-made board?? carbon fibre??? Are you mad!

unfortunately nothing so exotic. Once I was going to use some carbon fibre rod on proj no2 but used brass tube instead, simply because of the internal diameter and the hinges I wanted to glue inside them (aircraft style hinges, for rudders and so on). I have used glass-fibre rod on something or other, and I toyed with the idea of something similar for the mast on the Herald, but again, something mundane (a bit of wood dowel) was sufficient for this.

My word the Liver building must have drained the world supply of fag packets for a few years.

Large stag with humongous antlers crowding the boating area. Stupid mums and dads with very small children standing REALLY NEAR to it for photo opportunities, waving bags of bread around wondering why it was following them…. der

Tomorrow weather permitting I shall be car-less and boating-on-a-bike. I shall be bringing down proj No6, which is, I can scarcely believe, almost done! Trevor popped round on Thurs and we fired up no6 to carry out some power measurement, and although I don't intend to use a Lipo on it, a 3s battery almost had the thing ballistic.

"that's more like it" said Trevor and this may have been an understatement. I am not sure that this will translate into ballistic performance due to the size and shape of the craft, but it will certainly make it go much better than anticipated…

paint next and the complicated scheme is going to take some doing and a fair amount of time, but there you are. The Terrapin was so easy…green, green and more green.

Its a bit grey here but I am braving the park, as I would like to test out no6.

I had an issue with securing the cabins in place but this has been resolved by the most low=tech method I could devise, the rear cabin being held on by an appendage on the boat itself. Amazing, and only came to light once most of it had been built. You just cant do everything by drawing.
