Well, v bright today and sunny but J cold.
Weather deceptive. Pond appeared to be very calm but the wind got up a bit, enough to make inaugural run of iain`s fabulous new boat tricky, for a number of reasons, but a very good first run out. All things considered, great initial outing, could have been much worse, considering the odd shape and unknown c of G location. Pictures I think later on when perfected.
had unusual occurence today and had eye off the ball and…..disaster!!! the BFB went under. I think the wind must have caught the rather long wings and a combination of list and waves flooded the thing, completely. Other that it wont actually sink, due to the foam and so on we had to effect an LCT rescue as unbelievably it was out of reach of my 10m pole first off !! I ask you.
THEN, a whole BUNCH of families turned up with obviously christmas RTR fast types, about a dozen or so and utter mayhem ensued as they thrashed, crashed and dangerously ran full tilt into the jetty. Didnt they LARF!!!
I am all for kids getting into boating, but…
Kris turned up late with a quite large Griffin style military hovercraft, recently constructed and also on its first outing (traditional kitchen floor test does not count)..I am not sure but this may be BARRY`s handiwork?? Went well-ish…not tried in anger due to possibly dodgy lift ESC and also by this time the wind was definitely not hovercraft friendly. Needed some mods, we discussed this…. had a large brushless lift motor and we thought that the window air inlets were no where near big enough…it could do with a cut-to-fit three bladed lift prop and even despite the wind appeared to be a touch underpowered in the go dept. Could simply be improved upon by trying different props.
This may sound like a bit of a disaster but not really. All mods very easy to do and merely tinkering to improve upon the modest performance. on a clam day it would have been fine. My hovervan is even worse in any wind and on the same day if I had had a first outing, would have been contemplating the crusher.
Lastly Trevor turned up to show the latest stage in the construction of a real oddity, and a find I am very jealous of. Other than getting it to work properly which may be a big challenge, it is just so cool….a 1930`s design of really simple shape but outrageous art deco appearance. I would tell you what its called, as this would not give the game away but I have conveniently forgotten. This is a great project and apart from getting (again) the balance right, the most difficult thing will be the propulsion. This is unusual, and not exactly difficult, but inefficient in a model…and unfortunately an item we discussed just HAS to be there as it is a part of the design oddness. All to play for.
Too cold and wet to continue with this years biggy, so at a loose end. I may revisit a model started 8 years ago and shedded…propulsion diffs or at least difficult motor choice but with the advent of high torque brushless motors of reasonable size I may re-jig the mechanics a bit.
