With the Christmas tree sales taking up a good chunk of the car park Sunday boating will have to start early, I usually try to aim for 9am, any earlier it would be like getting up for work! Heaven forbid!!

Just finished the hull planking and if I say it myself it looks the part, balsa takes a wood dye so well. I am using a medium oak for the sides with various strips and decorative work in a dark teak, the trouble with period wooden ships everything can look very brown. My captain Jack Sparrow has been invaluable as a scale measurement especially for handrail heights, don’t want him falling overboard!

Ashley struck again with Santa’s landingcraft, very festive, the only thing missing was music and I have no doubt he’ll come up with something before Christmas! The man’s a modelling machine!

Nice one Richard. I hope he will learn some new shanties before he sets sail….

Have this coff/cold/sore throat that's going about. Will not be boating Sunday because of this, the weather looks atrocious at the moment in any case AND I am supposed to be playing at a concert in the afternoon.

Having said all that I have been a) making a stand for Berengar`s Roman Lorica segmentata out of 2×2, and its nice to get out there and fiddle with 4 inch coach bolts and big stuff, rather than faff about with ply the thickness of paper, then b) have been painting my figures up, about 70 of them. Something to do inside if a bit tedious!

Oh joy. Another v small envelope arrived today with 50 new crewmembers for the London. I have trimmed the 44 that are of any use and have already splashed some white paint on them.

They will have two coats of u/c white and two of dark blue, followed by flesh, then brown (for the various tools (I mean hand-spikes and deck brooms)

Went to Bushy this morning without speedboats and everyone still enjoyed themselves! Had small sailing boat and cruiser. Very good but we were alone. Still weather was a bit changeable and it did rain at one point but not enough to stop play. Must get on with my sailing yacht build as these do seem to generate quite a bit of interest among the boys!

Any sailing boat is always interesting to sail and the boys will have to concentrate on what’s going on, all good for young minds!

                    Hi all,

Have been cracking on with the Gull, planking all finished and poop deck hand rails fitted. Made my own columns with an electric drill in the vice and whittled them into shape with a file, health and safety would have me locked up but I’ve done it before without a problem.

The door to the captains cabin opens, this has two uses, one it looks good and two it gives me better access to the sail winch just inside on the right. Also there are two lift out sections in the poop deck floor to access the rudder servo and the winch. I put a lot more thought into accessibility than I did with the Minotaur which is a pain to work on in those areas.

The catsheads are in so now I have something to hang the anchors on and tonight the whole boat has had a good varnishing.

That’s it for now, new pictures in album.

Boat looking wonderfully rustic I would say, Richard. Do you have other crew members lined up?

Painted the other sailors for the London and stuck them on the deck. 60 in place now and that looks like a more realistic number.

Decided against putting the climbing figures on the ratlines as the two (men and ratlines) are not a good size match.

The cannon are probably a touch small, but the next size up is too big. The 1/87 figures look right with the cannon but again are a bit small for the ship.

                      |I would have liked 1/72 figures but then the guns would be a bit small and so it goes on.

realistically, the figures look fine, and are bringing the ship to life nicely. Ashley

Yes Ashley, as we speak I have two more figures winging there way via our old friend E bay.

I’m glad you mentioned the rustic look because that’s exactly what I was after with the Gull, no frills!

Am away this weekend so won’t be pondside Sunday, might try to get down mid week. Weather willing.

                              Hi all,

Just a quick blog to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a watertight New Year!

Probably won’t be down until the New Year now (weather wiling) the Gull is coming along nicely, soon be ready to make the sails, nice indoor job that!

Will post new pics as and when so if your bored over the holidays have a look in my album.

Yes, I know what you mean, the Gull is 90% complete just the sails to sow up,fit and connect to the sail winch and then it’s all down to sea trials!

My next venture will have to be a smaller scale as I am fast running out of space for storage, have to build another shed!

As it is raining today and cold I expect today’s boating will consist of more eeze-kote on this and lots of rubbing down!

I obviously got the wrong aftershave for Christmas as I was Johnny no mates today at the pond, you didn’t miss much as it was teeming with kids, dogs and duck feeders.

Lasted a couple of hours until my feet turned blue then went home.
