        Hi All

We have trouble with ones we call inch-men and they bite!!

If I find they nest a good dose of petrol around the hole and down it.

DO NOT LIGHT THE PETROL !!!!

They breathe via the skin and it kills them quick.

Teach them to bite me !!!

Unfortunately Harry the park police take a dim view of petrol being poured on grassy knoll`s ! (oddly enough)

Box seems to be clear today so will put them all back.

May struggle with the ruddering on Project V. today

            Hi Ashley

We try all the chemical stuff from the hardware center and we would be pushing up daisies by the time it works.

This is fast and furious !!!!

              ….but illegal!

Spent today drilling and gluing in the rudder tubes on project V. The rudder tubes are now firmly glued in but the centre section has to be cut out to allow the rudder in, and I will leave the filler to harden overnight before getting the junior hacksaw out.

Propulsion also firmly glued in place, and after a bit of fettling with a saw and some remedial blowtorch work, all the bits have been persuaded to fit together nicely and have been glued in place with filler and special silicone sealant. |What a mess!!! Is there a way to apply this neatly when you cant get the nozzle to the bit you want to stick together?? Still it matches the colour of the motors nicely.

Next I need to purchase ballast (lead shot) and a special ESC unit.

Tomorrow I may feel brave and tackle changing the mixer tap on the kitchen sink, and if this goes ok, continue with Project V.

Sink tap fully installed and leak free!!

Propulsion system has set ok and is immovable (as one would hope) and everything appears to line up ok. Work on rudders…rudders made and fitted OK. Actuation will be by a pully using a Meccano wheel on the rudder shaft. Some doubt exists as to exact rudder form, outline only on drawing, and although I planned to make them match the hull contours, this is not possible, so I have opted for plan B, which is aa simpler solutiuon.

However 8kG of lead shot has been ordered and the next step will be a propulsion and ballast trial, Probably followed by making a proper stand to support the hull whilst the rest is being built. I need the ballast to be in place before fixing the rudder servos in, as the shot will form part of the lower deck, as it were, being glued in place with resin to stop movement (ballast 0.3-1.6mm variable size balls) and also provide hull stiffening.

oo er….Model Boats June 2018 issue advert (on home page ) seems to have a picture of RCM&E on it…is this a takeover bid??? our glorious ex-editor making a power grab????? watch this space!!!!

Having cut fore and aft deck sections out for project V…I have glued the beneath deck support on the wrong side of the deck on the aft section!!! Luckily it still fits ok, and you will find out why this is good, later on…

You could have just uncovered a dastardly plan to amalgamate all of the hobby magazines into one single publication. It might seem like a good idea to those in the clever ideas department but who needs a monthly magazine thats the size of an old style telephone directory.

Meanwhile we await the outcome of the gluing misadventure with baited breath.

                              Yeah yeah….heard it all before…

8Kg of lead shot has arrived, and it looks, and feels like very heavy dust! 0.3mm is very small, and the stuff runs like a liquid rather than the powder it appears to be. I was going to tip it in the hull temporarily in order to run trails, but have now bagged it up in 1kg and 500gm Ziploc bags. This will enable easy positioning and of course there will be no hassle with lead balls running everywhere.

As a bonus I will be able to see straight away where the ballast needs to be and of what weight. As I am going to mix the ballast with resin, I will have to under-ballast the hull as making it too heavy would be very difficult to correct if it was found that the completed model (all the rest of the fittings and so on) were heavier than expected..

There is also the matter of the LOOK on the water when under way. I need something to be visible when moving along or the whole point of the ship will be lost and it will just be another Victorian warship.

Fairly sure that RN had been using oil as fuel for some time when the K's came about. Coal seems illogical, and in a submarine, even more scary than an oil fired boiler. Stray coal dust and a fire that could not be shut down quickly.

When first designed in 1913 the K class were intended to have coal fired steam engines but later changed to oil fired due to the problem of shifting mass as the coal moved in the bunkers.

Admiral Jacky Fisher, who later became First Sea Lord opposed the design and said 'The most fatal error imaginable would be to put steam engines in submarines'

He wasn't wrong there! Still I suppose you just had to use the technology available at the time and only steam powered engines could give enough power to enable the subs to keep up with the battlefleet although that turned out to be a flawed concept as well.

For their time they were amazingly ingenious machines though.

……..and of course all nuclear powered subs are really steam powered, just something different heating the water that doesn't need huge quantities of air.

Last Sunday. Project S, Farnham, LCF, SansP Lovely day left quite late.

Project V has had some ballast glued on. This lead shot 0.3-1.6mm diameter mixed with resin and dumped inside, smoothed over with a lolly stick. Has dried and is fab…all the tiny grains are stuck together and a total of 5Kg(plus about 120gm of resin, mustn't forget that) is sitting in there solid as a rock and bonded to the hull, to be self supporting and stiffening up the hull in the process. This is not ALL the ballast needed, but will do for a starter.

Hopefully the extra resin will have plugged the last of the small leaks, and one bit of jksdfhkjwefr needs renewing as its not the right length, or at least, it is doing the job but I can take any chances on this bit leaking.

Hi Ashley, regards your ballast, if you glue in all the ballast needed this could make your boat very heavy to handle. i use plastic bags, filled with shot with glue added, then position in the hull and allow to set. removal is easy and re-fitting is the same, but, the model is light and less likely to get damaged
