        Ash

A 10 bob note was small enough to roll up into a tiny wad that would fit up your nose, not something that you would learn at a public school but a valuable life skill if, as an apprentice you wanted to hang on to your first weeks wages.

If you recall Flashman's approach to relieving recalcitrant junior boys of small bits of paper you might revise your opinion on the advantages of learning concealment techniques…

@DM Your knowledge of obscure Midlands towns undoubtedly does you credit (in certain company), but which part of "He is staying near Staverton, 12.6 google map miles away" confused you? Is my faith in a public school education to take an unexpected and unwelcome shaking?

Well, you do need to know the ground a bit for following the Hunt. However, you may have missed my comment about checking updates – I sent my message in before reading Ashley's….

I suppose a 'Nissan Hut' should have read 'Nissan' (sic)….

I rather suspect that the point DM was trying to make was that it should be Nissen hut, not Nissan, as these structures were named after their inventor, Major Peter Norman Nissen …

DG – I didn't miss your comment; I just missed the point of it (which was…..?). Ah well – put it down to me being a former scholarship day-boy – thick as a brick and common as muck.

Thick as a brick and common as muck is better than a narcissistic bully, yes I know all about Flashman and his ilk, and just think that these young 'gentlemen' went on to run the empire.

The same weak chinned, self serving types still prevail throughout todays civil service.its not surprising that Britain is in such a mess.

              I'm all right Jack.

Ah, DM – the British Public School system doesn't value intelligence at all – 'too clever by half' is their view.

It used to value the ability to stay in your saddle while galloping towards Russian guns, the ability to walk to the Pole and either die on the return or have to cut your own fingers off, and the ability to run in front of your men while charging concealed machine gun posts through mud. Nowadays, it values whatever Russian and Chinese oligarchs value, and increasingly, has little to do with the UK educational system at all…

                  Todays boating.

Proj No5. Still V tender on a 9.6 Nimh batt positioned along the centreline. Quite fast but alarming leaning tendancies esp when shutting off after full power(?). 7.,2V Stick all ok now, no tendereness discernable. Not quite as fast but very useable, handy beinbg able to make care-free turns at full speed!

LCM68 out rescuing Peter`s LCM, whose ESC (after losing reverse a while ago) finally gave up. His yellow jet-boat performing really well now after a few tweaks. Still needs a bit of work, but quite quick and a really good "jet" noise from the 10,000,000 Kv edf unit.

Sorry – I can't agree. That's a silly speed for a scale model. It looks like what it is – an overpowered, badly-driven toy boat.

Didn't the Flower class have a 16 knot top speed? Isn't the kit 1/72 scale?? What appears to be a very nice model is made to look completely ridiculous by the numpty on the transmitter. He should either buy a twenty-quid Chinese plastic speedboat from Maplins or take up modelling 'Top Fuel' dragsters.

When I made the Sunderland, all those years ago, I didn't think about the props it would need, but luckily I found some about the right size, 2-bladers only, and motors from a foam type park-flyer.

Well, with the advent of all those drones appearing there is now a huge range of multiblade props to get. I have seen 5 inch six bladed ones (perfect for the Ecranoplan, 5 inch 5-blade, some nice 4 inch 4 bladers, and three blade ones of similar size! The latter perfect for the Sunderland.

Unfortunately these props use an adaptor to fasten to the motor shaft, unlike the props on the Sunderland which simply are a push-on fit. This means the prop sticks forward quite a bit and look funny (on the Sunderland ). It would need a bit of shaft shortening first or motor repositioning…a bit tricky.

Graupner speed 320 motors would appear to be a good upgrade for shorty, using the new props and I see a spending spree looming on motors, props and adaptors.

The Foam Flier has to go I have decided. £30, motor and servo included, but not ESC or receiver. Collection only really, (as a box to post it in would be massive, it does not weigh much but it would require a mountain of bubble wrap and cost as much to post as the thing itself ) I only made it just to see how easy it would be using Styrofoam, and it performs much as the first one I made and I should be using that really, eh? I will make a new post separately after Christmas. Pics see album. It does not have such a good finish as the A90, but its ok for what it is, and dinks can be filled and repainted very easily.

A happy new year to all "todays boating" fans, and what will the new year bring??

I have no outrageous projects in mind (yet) although the long running proj No1 needs finally sorting out, and the others need in the main photographing and "optimising" (to stop them turning over so easily) and I hope to do this without cutting down on the outrageous top speeds that they are capable of.

I am going to build the Mantua Victory, but I don't see this at taking too long as the parts appear to be nicely cut out and only half the hull needs planking, the rest (the gunport bit) is a pre-printed and cut sheet(s), as is the stern. I shall be simplifying the rigging to give the right look, rather than going the whole hog as I feel this is where the main difficulty lies.

On another matter, The Mrs has a new cheapo push bike via E-bay and it had a cable lock on it, no key. I clamped the wire in a vice and cut through the cable in about 45 seconds using a junior hacksaw with a well-used blade. Just shows you. However the task would have been a bit more tricky trying to hold the thing still at the bike stand (whilst stealing it). It never ceases to amaze me how people (and I have seen them in Halfords) collect a brand new £300+ bike and then buy a piddly cheap lock for it.

I have no doubt another project will come along when I am least expecting it…..I shal see something, or someone will mention something and wham, that will be the next one. Who knows, I might even see something in MB magazine to inspire me…????

Some years ago I had to go and rescue my son from the local Railway Station, his bike lock had jammed in the locked position.

I took it off in less than 5 minutes with a junior hacksaw, underneath the security camera.

My bike is secured in my shed with a very large padlock and a motor bike security chain, weighing over 2 kilos. This is after being 'shredded' as DM puts it last year, when they stole a £500 bike.

The 'normal' lightweight bikes at just not secure.

That's your trouble then DM, you eat THREE shredded wheat's for breakfast ¬!!

You can only stop someone pinching a bike by a) having a decent lock, b) securing it with that lock to a post/rack/whatever. I would go for a £60 "D" lock as a starter. Big m/c chains are obviously great but not portable.

I had, years ago, two 3-foot strops made up, from 1/2 inch stainless steel wire rope, at a boat-chandlers. Wasn't that dear, and is fantastic for static security (garage) with a decent padlock….the big disc ones are quite secure apparently.

Whoops! Yes, predictive text on Kindle Fire! Sometimes I think it would be quicker to type without the predictive text.
