Hi Ray, good idea you have with the cork, I know its not conventional but could you raise the hight level of the hatch slightly. Another way I have, I put a thin layer of silicon on the hatch side and then put clingfilm over it then pushed the hatch cover down on top until dry, It makes a nice snug fit and conforms to the hatch shape.Trim off the clingfilm after

260118 015.jpgHi Andy

I hope all is well down under ? I'm back on the little barge, managed to rig the sprit, I'm using SS fishing trace and crimps for most of the standing rigging, I can now cut some card templates for the sails and get stitching

Gareth, I very much liked the Solartex hatch covering effect on Spider J260118 016.jpg, I will be giving it a go !

Regards Ray

Hi All

Now moving on the below deck works for the main sheet and vang control lines, which will enter the hull via the 5/32" diameter tubes bent to fit after annealing to bright red and quenched in cold water to soften. The main sheet is central and the vang to the side, I'm going to use a decent quality Avox servo with a brass arm for sail control.

As far as sail control is concerned, experienced modeler Peter Simmonds wrote to me that he is using in his TSB models the Hitec 765HB lever arm servo for main sheet , and vangs too.

In my Capricorn I have sailing winch for main sheet and lever arm servo for vangs,

Some photos you can see here>

Maybe some next answers you can find here... =>

greetings Tom

Hi Ray,

You've made good progress with your build of Giralda, I'm learning to control the sowing machine a bit more everyday, Now that i have passed my proficiency test with it. Good luck making your sails. Its not as easy as I first thought. I liked your idea of using wire trace for your standing rigging. Sailed "Windsor Belle " pretty well in a 30klm breeze last week, Gusting to 35 klm, still dry in the hold, Lucky eh !

Regards, Andy

We welcome well written contributions from Website members on almost any aspect of Model Boating with a particular emphasis on practical hints, tips, experience and builds.

In order to maintain a consistent standard and format, all suggestions should first be sent to me by Personal Message for approval in principle. Only a very limited amount of time is available for editing contributions into a suitable format for placing on the website so it is important that the material is well presented, lucid and free from obvious spelling errors. I think it goes without saying that contributions should be illustrated by appropriate photos. I shall be happy to give advice on this.

The Member Contribution area offers space for short informative mini articles which would not normally find a place in Model Boats magazine. It is an opportunity for Website Members to freely share their  expertise and experience but I am afraid that virtue is its own reward as there is no budget to offer more material recompense!

I look forward to receiving your suggestions.
