On Monday 27th April, Bridlington MBS hosted a scale event which was part of the activities planned by Jim Worner for the Modellers’ Week based at Thornwick Bay nearby in North Yorkshire. Also planned, were a One Metre yacht and fast electric event, both of which are also catered for at the Carnaby Lake.

Ian Phillips, the Society Secretary, was putting on a good show at the lake with Paul Crawshaw, both running Fairey Huntsman 31 models. Ian’s was a 1:16 scale 34 inch model, beautifully built and the larger to 1:12 scale was run by Paul with a 900 turbo motor running on 18 cells and featuring a V8 sound unit which gave an impressive sound to back the equally impressive performance. As if this was not enough, the front cabin was very tastefully fitted out with many nice touches of realism. One of the benefits of 1:12 scale is that many doll’s house accessories are available to suit. The improvement in electric motor performance over recent years (Ian Phillips is no stranger to fast electric models) means that modern motors produce a level of performance and running duration not generally seen in past decades.

Dave Markham had his model of the excursion boat Yorkshire Belle which was featured in Model Boats in 2008 and is also available as a plan from MyHobbyStore. There was a ‘blast from the past’ in the form of a really nice Veron Caribbean Coaster kit bought in the 1970s and just recently completed. Ours is a hobby that need not be hurried!

One of the characters of the Bridlington MBS is Arthur Pickering, seen here wearing his pirate hat. There were several positive comments from the pond side, but ‘hanging’ sadly came as the most popular option!

Ian Adcock of Midway Models was in attendance for the holiday week and this enabled modellers to purchase vital spares as required.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, so clearly a job well done by Jim Worner and the Bridlington MBS which really does a superb private lake and clubhouse facilities. Bridlington MBS have a website: www.bridmodelboats.co.uk and the Membership Secretary is George Robinson, tel: 01262 609221. The society is affiliated to the MPBA.
